Crockett refuses to open his mouth when he arrives at med. Natalie told the police and the EMTs what happened, which means that Noah is more than aware of what to expect, but he keeps his lips firmly sealed as he lays in the hospital bed, soaking up the painkillers and blood feeding into his IV. Someone brought his tongue. It was too late, even then, to do anything, but it proves what happened to him.
Eventually, he just sits down on Crockettās hospital bed, careful not to touch him in fear of scaring him more after what heās been through. The cops have come and gone, knowing that they wonāt get anything out of him until his hands stop shaking and he allows medical treatment. Apparently Natalie said plenty for them both on the ambulance ride back to Med.Ā
āYouāre safe now,ā he tries. āThey canāt hurt you anymore. I wonāt let them.ā
Crockett looks at him, soulful eyes so sad in comparison to their usual mirth. Itās like itās not even the same person anymore. Perhaps it isnāt; this new Crockett in front of him will never again make a joke followed by the most beautiful laugh in the world. He wonāt speak the most confusing cajun slang and explain with more slang until no one can understand but they smile anyways because itās hard not to when listening to the honeyed tone of his voice.Ā
A bead of blood escapes the corner of his lips and Noah knows his mouth must be still full of it. Noah gets him a plastic tray and holds it out. At last he opens up. He spits out so much blood that it makes something in Noahās chest go tight, and finally, he allows himself to be examined by Noahās gentle touch. He has to make him rinse twice with saline just to see beyond the blood.Ā
The cut is jagged, and still bleeding, of course. Itāll need stitches. Noah calls out a request for them, hoping someone hears, given that Crockett is still far too skittish for more than just one person to be in the hospital room at a time, especially the day shift nurses who mostly have yet to warm up to him. Maggie and April have, but theyāre not on today. Itās just people Crockett doesnāt trust. That leaves Noah to try and piece together what happened and come up with a plan to fix him, while attempting to keep from scaring him further.Ā
āIām going to stitch you up to stop the bleeding,ā he says slowly, carefully, quietly. āDo you want local anaesthetic or to be knocked out? Hold up one finger for local, two for general.ā
Crockett shakes his head.Ā
It hurts Noah too, but he agrees and shakes his head at the nurse preparing a shot of novocaine. She hesitates. But she doesnāt push the issue, and leaves the stitch kit by the bed before abandoning them once more. Noah cups Crockettās bloody jaw and asks him to keep his mouth open and let him know if he needs painkillers. Itās a mess. But still, he takes the time to stitch him up with dissolvable thread and careful, small knots. Heāll need a feeding tube until the wound is closed, something theyāll handle once Crockett is a bit calmer.
