Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) Lead Student Producer for our local PBS station Brian Kenney visited Special Collections yesterday with Chicago-based Milwaukee blues musician Matt Hendricks to review and film our deluxe box set of re-issued vinyl pressings and documentary materials of Paramount Records blues recordings from 1917-1932. The set, housed in facsimile vintage turntable boxes, is in two volumes, Paramount: The Rise & Fall. Volume One, 1917-1927 and The Rise and Fall of Paramount. Volume Two, 1928-32.
Paramount Records was based in Grafton, Wisconsin, about 20 miles north of our campus. A parade of now-legendary Black blues artists made their way to Paramountâs Grafton studios in the early 20th-century to record the companyâs so-called ârace records,â the most lucrative part of their business. Their catalog of recordings is now an important archive of early blues music, which has been reissued in this 2013-14 set by John Fahey's and Dean Blackwoodâs Revenant Records and Jack White's Third Man Records. The set includes documentary books; facsimiles of posters, programs, and advertisements; âfield manualsâ with complete artist bios and recording lists; a library of vinyl records with over 160 recordings; and flash drives (housed in attractive art-deco holders) with images of printed ephemera and over 1600 additional recordings. Wow!
Kenney filmed Hendricks going through and discussing the various elements of the set. Hendricks also played a few licks on his vintage, metal-bodied resonator guitar signed by legendary Delta blues musician Honeyboy Edwards. The filming was capped with an interview on the importance of preserving this music at a public institution by our very own music librarian Anna Schmidt.Â
The purpose of the film session is to produce a short video about Paramount Records and the legacy of the blues in Milwaukee (which will also include Hendricksâs visit to the site of the recording studio in Grafton and to blues and ragtime musician Blind Blake's grave) to be used in conjunction with a Milwaukee PBS YouTube channel livestream of Live at the Lakefront 2021, a free, Wednesday-evening, summer concert series in the Rotary Amphitheater at Milwaukeeâs Discovery World Museum, August 4-25. Another MATC character! I finished her literally like 2-3 months ago but I never posted her since I didnât have a backstory written out, but I decided fuck it and Iâll edit this post when I have a story for her, now introducing:
Chai!
Alrighty sheâs finally released from the unreleased art quarantine, Chai! Since I donât have a set backstory for her Iâm giving you design factoids!
Her name (Chai) is actually shortened and pronounced from the Chinese word for rainbow (Caihong)! She was originally gonna have some face paint based on the face markings of Chinese dragon/lion dancers because her entire design is based off of them
I also made her blue because for some reason I found the blue and yellow dragons the cutest + if I made her read thereâd be too many red characters lol
Hereâs some extra design tips + her original concept design! Itâs the same but just missing a couple things
The story for her so far is: she went to the same part Maki went to, got high and had the trip of a life time about her lineage being connected to âThe Legendary Rainbow Dragonâ or something, is now combat ready and os basing her whole life on rainbows and Chinese dragons
The storyâs subject to change since it isnât really worked out so bare w me here đ

graduated high school. enrolled in college. in 6 months i went from not knowing if i would even graduate high school on time to having graduated over a full semester early, enrolling in community college for gen ed courses, and moving to Los Angeles to go to my dream school this summer. all of this, in 6 months.
