Minister red-faced over 'detention' at airport

KOTA KINABALU, March 31:
A Sarawak minister claimed he was embarrassed when Immigration officers in Sabah did not recognise his VIP pass and a photocopy of his identity card on Sunday.
Sarawak’s Land Development Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing claimed to be “temporarily detained” by Immigration officers when he was checking in to return home at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport.
Sabah Immigration Department director Noor Alam Khan, in clarifying the issue, said Masing was merely stopped for identity clarification and not detained as claimed.
Noor Alam said Masing was stopped at the immigration counter yesterday after he produced only a special pass used by ministers and elected representatives (VIP pass) and a photocopied identity card (IC) for identification.
“He showed my officers the VIP pass and photocopied IC. It was just our standard operating procedure to clarify his identity. So he was stopped at the counter while the officers double-checked his details,” said Noor Alam.
He added that Sabah Immigration Department officers had the right to stop or detain anyone for identification clarification if the need arose.
Masing was later given the green light after officials were satisfied with the details on the documents.
Borneo Post Sarawak reported that the Parti Rakyat Sarawak president was on a 3-day holiday with his family in Sabah since Friday before returning home to Sarawak on Sunday.
According to the report, Masing claimed he was detained for about 5 to 10 minutes by the Immigration officers at KKIA because he was in casual attire.
He described the incident as “embarrassing” as he had to prove he was James Jemut Masing.
Masing said he never had any problem flying to Kuala Lumpur or Sabah using the VIP pass before, adding that he had been using the photocopied IC since he had lost the document twice before.
