The Magnificat, Mary’s hymn of joy, marks the first time anyone recognized her as the mother of Our Lord. And it marks the beginning of Mary’s public ministry.

Wait. What? Mary had a public ministry?

We don’t have any Mary parables. She wasn’t out teaching, healing the sick, raising the dead, or any of that stuff.

Right. Because that wasn’t her public ministry. Mary’s public ministry wasn’t being Christ.

Mary’s public ministry was being a Christian. Being the first Christian.

With Mary’s yes, she was all in. No reservations. Nothing held back. 100% in for God’s plan.

Which means that Mary lived the faith. Without counting the cost.

So it should surprise no one that we look to her as our model. Our first and best example of how to follow Jesus. Of what it really means to be a Christian.

And the Assumption? If we see Mary for who she really is, the first Christian. The first to be 100% in. Then it makes perfect sense that the God who was with her every step of the way would bring her home.

Good for her. But what does any of that mean for you and me, two millennia later?

It means that Mary is our exemplar, our roadmap. In the face of all of the heartache and all of the tears, with all that she went through, Mary shows us what it really means to be a Christian.

The Assumption is nothing less than proof of God’s promise. God’s promise to Mary. God’s promise to each one of us.

That in spite of the heartache, in spite of the tears. That no matter what we go through. God will be with us, every step of the way. And that at the last, God will bring us home.

Oven? Fire.

Microwave? Fire.

Fireworks? Fire.

Old heater or AC/unit? Fire.

Car wreck? Fire.

I think she lets slip how underdone she likes meat in general (even the stuff she shouldn't like ground beef) and how she loves a slightly metallic taste to everything.

and millie rolls her eyes and SCOFFS because, "you think you can get advice from ME? I got LEFT." 🙄

john cries a little and millie says,

and then john is saying "remember how her dad died of a heart attack?' well she said she and her mom had a falling out, and i was thinking she could bury the hatchet and AT LEAST let her mom meet little dean, you know? He's NAMED after her!!!!! and i mean, this's her grandson!!!111 BUT. BUT she said she'd stop speaking to me forever if i reached out"

-- and at this point, john is pacing with the phone, and millie is rolling her eyes on the other side of the line (because everyone needs to gaslight john ok it's essential so he gets more crazy) --

but ANYWAY.

at this point john is like, "finding people was my thing in the marines i was GOOD at tracking, it's what i'm GOOD at and I -- I CAN'T FIND HER, MOM. I MET HER AND I CAN'T FIND HER-- she's NOT at her OWN house and WHERE IS SHE i can’t find a record of samuel’s death either… there should be a death certificate"

and millie IS disturbed by that but shrugs it off with a joke, "so, what? you think your wife is an ax murderer or something???"

and then john says, "don't be ridiculous... but wait, do you think..."

and millie is like "no, john. it was just a joke. jfc"

and john is like "do you think something happened to her mom too??? it was weird, the night her dad died, and-- idk i could SWEAR he was bleeding, so like… what if it was a mafia hit or something????”

john THINKS he hears a little intake of breath, but it's DEFINITELY not millie, and then john goes very still like OMG SURELY MARY IS NOT LISTENING IN

and millie is like "john? john?"

then john launches into his and his mom's version of Poughkeepsie and start talking about music and casablanca and millie is like, "I think i'll come over for a visit and help w the baby"

john thinks he hears a soft click of the line

(mary, again)

then millie says "i love you and i'll see you soon"
