The first thing you saw when you opened your eyes was your husband.
Jaafar was already awake.
He wasn't on his phone.
He wasn't watching television.
He wasn't even trying to go back to sleep.
He was just lying there beside you, quietly staring.
The moment you opened your eyes, he smiled.
"Good morning, Mrs. Jackson."
You laughed softly.
"Good morning, Mr. Jackson."
He leaned over and tried to kiss you.
You pressed a hand to his face and pushed him back. "Boy, get outta my face with that. We just woke up."
He laughed, grabbing your wrist. "Damn, Ma, good mornin' to you too."
"No, 'cause you nasty. Ain't neither one of us brushed our teeth yet."
"You actin' like I care."
"And that's exactly why you need to move."
He just smiled. "Still tryna kiss you."
"Boy, bye."
"Mm-hmm," he laughed. "Come here, Ma."
"Nuh-uh. Bathroom first."
โMr. Jackson.โ
"You know," he said, "I still like hearing that."
"Hearing what?"
"My wife."
You smiled.
"Really?"
"Mmhm."
He wrapped his arms around you and buried his face in your neck.
"My wife."
"You already said that."
"I know."
"And?"
"And I waited my whole life to say it."
You laughed and ran your fingers through his hair.
"You are ridiculous."
"And yet you married me."
"Unfortunately."
He gasped dramatically.
"Unfortunately?"
"Mhm."
"Wow."
"You know what? Forget breakfast."
"Oh?"
"I'm filing for divorce."
"Baby, we've been married three months."
"Exactly. I had enough after two."
You both started laughing.
He tried again, and you pushed his face away with a groan.
"Boy, if you don't quit."
He laughed. โI love you."
A smile was now on your face.
"I know."
He grinned. "You ain't gon' say it back?"
"I literally just said it yesterday."
"And?"
"And it ain't expire overnight."
He laughed. "Mm. That's my girl."
"And don't get comfortable neither. Go brush your teeth."
"Yes, ma'am."
"'Fore I change my mind."
He laughed, reaching for your hand instead. "Mean as hell first thing in the mornin'."

About an hour later, the two of you were in the gym.
Well.
Jaafer was working out.
You were mostly bothering him.
"You know," you said, sitting backwards on a bench, "if you flex any harder the seams in your shirt are gonna divorce each other.โย
"I'm trying to focus."
"Mhm."
"You distract me."
"You love distractions."
"No, I love you."
You smiled.
"Oh, that's smooth."
"I know."
He continued lifting weights.
"So."
"So?"
"How many times are you gonna look in the mirror?"
He looked offended.
"I do not look in the mirror that much."
You pointed.
"Baby."
He turned.
There was a mirror right in front of him.
"Oh."
You laughed.
"I rest my case."
"Mind your business."
You started filming him.
"Jaafer Jackson caught flirting with his own reflection."
He laughed.
"Delete that."
"No."
"Ma."
"No."
"Baby."
"No."
"Come on, pretty girl, please."
"No."

Neverland had never been this alive.
After Michael passed, nobody could bear seeing it empty.
So together, the family restored it.
Not to replace what was.
But to honor him.
The main house was constantly full.
Janet.
Jackie.
Marlon.
Randy.
Mama Katherine.
And whoever else happened to be there that day.
But some people had their own cottages.
You and Jaafer.
Jermajesty.
Paris.
Bigi.
Though honestly, nobody respected boundaries.
โ โ โ โ โ โย
Especially Jermajesty.
You had just finished making lunch when the front door swung open.
"Hello?"
You didn't even look up from the stove.
"Door was unlocked."
Jermajesty walked in like he owned the place.
"You got your own house."
"I know."
"Then why you over here?"
"'Cause your food better."
"You literally live right there."
"And?"
"And you know how to cook."
Jermajesty shrugged. "And you know I ain't gonna."
"Boy, you ain't got no home trainin'."
He grinned. "Love you too."
Before you could answer, another voice floated in from outside.
"Hello? Anybody in here?"
Paris.
And right behind her
"Hey."
Bigi.
Neither one waited for an invitation.
Within five minutes, all three of them were spread out around your kitchen island, opening juice bottles, stealing food off plates, and arguing over what movie was getting put on.
Nobody had even asked.
Jermajesty was already fixing himself a plate.
"Majesty, if you don't put some of that back..."
"I'm hungry."
"So am I. That's why I cooked it."
"And that's why I'm eating it."
"You see what I deal with?" you muttered.
Then Janet walked in carrying her purse.
"Oh, good. Everybody over here."
"Aunty Janet, they just invited themselves in," you complained.
Janet waved a hand. "Baby, even I stopped knocking years ago."
Paris laughed. "At this point, what's yours is ours."
"Not my groceries."
Jermajesty looked up from his plate. "Well too late for dat."
You stared at him.
"You're unbelievable."
"And fed," he said through a mouthful of food.
"Boy, chew your food with your mouth closed."
At some point, all the houses on the property had stopped feeling separate.
Everybody just wandered in and out, fussed at each other, and left with leftovers.

By late afternoon, the entire family had gathered for a barbecue.
Old-school music floated through the speakers.
First came some Earth, Wind & Fire.
Then The Isley Brothers.
Stevie Wonder.
Anita Baker.
The Gap Band.
New Edition.
A little Luther Vandross.
Then one of Michael's songs came on, and half the family immediately started singing along like they were backup vocalists. (Jermaine)
Kids ran around.
The smell of jerk chicken, burgers, and ribs drifted through the air.
Jaafer stood beside the grill, focused.
Until Randy casually said
"I think those burgers done."
"No, they not."
Everybody turned.
Jaafer blinked.
Because that wasn't him.
That was Marlon.
Standing over the grill.
Arms crossed.
Completely serious.
"Flip them."
"Not yet."
"Flip them."
"Not yet."
"You finna burn them."
"I'm not burning them."
"You are."
"Oh, my God."
And Jermajesty whispered
"J*e done possessed him."
Even Jaafar was laughing.
"Uncle Marlon, you sound just like Uncle Michael."
Marlon froze.
Then smiled.
"Well..."
"He would've hated these burgers."
Everybody started laughing.
"He would've been over here fussing at all of us," Randy added.
"And telling everybody they not seasoning the food enough," Jackie said
"Mm-hmm," Katherine smiled. And sneaking food when he thought nobody was looking."
Everybody laughed again.
Instead of feeling sad...
It felt peaceful.
The sun was beginning to set.
"Rock With You" started playing through the speakers.
Jermajesty immediately got up and started dancing, making Paris and Bigi laugh.
Marlon smiled.
"He would've loved this though."
Janet smiled.
"Yeah."
"He would've."
It almost felt like he was right there with them.

By nightfall, everybody had gathered inside the main house.
Blankets.
Snacks.
Pillows.
Somebody had made popcorn.
Mama Katherine had made sweet potato pie.
And somehow...
Jermajesty had the remote.
"Oh absolutely not."
Paris groaned.
"We are not watching Sharknado."
"It's cinema."
"It is garbage."
"It's beautiful garbage."
"It's literally about flying sharks."
"And?"
"Majesty, be serious."
"It's art."
"It's the movie of the unemployed," Paris shot back.
Janet nearly choked laughing.
Eventually, after twenty minutes of arguing, they settled on something else.
Half the room fell asleep before the opening credits finished.
Jermajesty stole somebody else's blanket.
"Who got my cover?"
Jermajesty looked offended.
"Why y'all lookin' at me?"
"'Cause you a thief."
"I ain't touch nobody blanket."
"Boy, that's literally mine on your lap."
"...Finders keepers."
"Majesty!"
Randy was knocked out on the couch, snoring loud enough to compete with the TV.
Jackie threw a pillow at him.
"Randy, if you don't stop sawing logs."
"You louder than the movie," Marlon laughed.
Jermaine and Jackie had somehow started telling stories from the 70s.
Marlon was laughing as always.
Janet had one foot tucked underneath her, half asleep.
And Jermajesty...
Still complaining.
"Who ate my cheesecake?"
"You ain't even buy that cheesecake."
"That's not the point."
"Boy, hush."
Peace had finally returned to Neverland.

Later that night, back in your cottage, you finished your skincare routine, well lathered in cocoa butter, bonnet on your head, silk wrap to protect your wash and go underneath it till tomorrow.ย
Jaafar was already stretched out in bed, scrolling on his phone.
The second he saw you climb under the blankets, he smiled.
"There, my wife go."
You laughed.
"There, my husband go."
He opened his arms.
"Come here, Ma."
You settled against his chest with a sigh.
"Mmm."
His lips brushed your forehead.
"There she is."
"You so spoiled."
"And whose fault is that, Mama?"
"Yours."
"Nah. You made me like this."
You smiled.
After a moment, he spoke softly.
"You know somethin'?"
"Hm?"
"I think he'd be happy."
You looked up.
"Michael?"
He nodded.
"Yeah."
"Seein' everybody together. Laughin'. Stealin' each other's food. Majesty gettin' on everybody's nerves."
You laughed.
"That boy definitely inherited the Jackson genes."
Jaafar chuckled.
"But nah, Ma. I mean it."
"He would've loved today."
You smiled.
"I think so too."
Both of you smiled.
Then the room fell quiet again.
Jaafar wrapped his arms around you tighter and kissed the top of your bonnet.
