My school’s band went to a national marching competition and we arrived only to realize I’d forgotten my piccolo. My drum major tried to throw the podium at me. And also, my friend fell off a horse.

being in marching band and not knowing how DCI works/competitions in general is the funniest thing ever
you have friends who are so excited to go to this huge competition and youre just like “im so happy for you and all of that, i dunno what a fucking prelim is”
marching band competition etiquette
since my band will be at our first competition tomorrow, i thought i’d take a break from posting my notes to talk about etiquette at competitions.
the most important thing is to respect other bands. even if they’re your main rivals, they, just like you, spent hours working on their show in hot august weather.
when you pass another band, if they’ve just performed, say “nice job,” and if they haven’t gone yet or you’re not sure if they’ve performed yet or not, say “good luck.”
when you’re in the stands watching performances, clap when there’s a cool moment in their show, but don’t boo or talk negatively when something goes wrong or doesn’t look good.
clap every time a band is announced in the awards ceremony. even if it’s a band you don’t like. even if they beat you.
good luck everyone who’s at a comp tomorrow or any other competition this season! if you’ve never been to a competition before, you’re in for a treat :)
If you have a marching band contest/competition today, good luck and have fun!
