New Witch Advice
Hi, so youâve decided to embark on the great adventure into witchcraft. Thatâs cool. And Iâm here for it :) So I wanted to give you a little advice to start your journey and to hold onto through out the process of learning, experiencing and connecting with witchcraft and those within the community.
~ Youâre energy doesnât need to match anyone elseâs energy for you to practice witchcraft or for you to be successful at it ~
Just because you meet a group of witches that can do 2 hour long rituals doesnât mean you have to also do 2 hour long rituals. If someone who is claiming to have some sort of authority within our community is shaming you, making you feel unwelcomed or causing you to doubt your studies and practice as a witch - Itâs best to cut that person (or those people) loose. There is no set amount of time a spell, ritual, reading etc should take in order for it to be effective. We are all different. We all work at different paces. We all have different amounts of energy we can give. Donât let someone tell you youâre being lazy because you arenât dedicating every free moment to witchcraft or youâre not doing spells and rituals that take hours. You work at your pace.
~ Never trust anyone that tells you itâs expensive being a witch or that you need to spend X amount of dollars in order to be a âreal witchâ ~
Tarot cards, crystals, herbs etc. are all nice to have but not at all necessary for a successful practice. Sticks, dirt, rocks, shells, water etc. are all things that are just as useful and usually free. And most of us have been building our collection of supplies and tools over the course of many years.
~ No, you do not have to be gifted your tarot decks ( or any tools ) ~
Idk who made that up but itâs absolutely untrue lol. You can purchase your own tarot decks, and itâs probably better if you do. Youâre more likely to get one you really connect with and that you chose because you actually like it, not something you feel obligated to use because someone else gave it to you. This goes for every single tool you might want / need in your practice. Buying your own stuff is fine.
~ Yes, you can total buy tools and (certain) supplies secondhand ~
Thrift stores, FB marketplace and Ebay are great places to find secondhand things you might want for you practice. Everything from books, crystals, tarot decks and more. Just be careful of the energies attached to the items and consider cleansing them before actually using them. Never hurts to start fresh.
~ Just because itâs online doesnât mean itâs true BUT just because itâs on Tumblr, Pinterest, IG, FB etc. doesnât mean itâs untrue either ~
Using spells and rituals you find on Tumblr (or anywhere else online) is fine as long as you know what youâre doing (be sure that crystals is okay to be placed in liquid, make sure youâre not allergic to herbs or they wonât interfere or interact with any medications you are on, and PLEASE never ingest essential oils! lol Just do your research first). Some of the funniest, simplest spells and rituals are on Tumblr. It doesnât mean theyâre stupid, lazy or ineffective.
~ Journal it alllllll ~
Like forreal, just journal anything and everything related to your practice and studies. You never know what might come in handy later and itâs always nice to look back on.Â
And so thereâs just some advice. Good luck on your journey and studies!

The Mabon style is inspired by the Mabon Festival, a time of gratitude that celebrates the Autumn Equinox. Witches don their finest clothing to make offerings of wine, cider, and herbs, giving thanks for the balance provided by the seasons. This style will be coming soon to Covens! âïžđ€đ

Just a note, garden witches... when you set candles into your mulch.. you end up with a giant clump of wood chips fused to the bottom of your candle..and now that candle can only be used in the garden. i might be speaking from experience here... đ±đŻ

Testing the Validity of Tarot
I happened upon an interesting PDF this evening. This paper, titled Testing the Validity of Tarot Cards: Can We Distinguish Between a Real and a Controlled Reading by Itai Ivtzan & Christopher C. French of the University of London was ... presented? at the 2004 Parapsychological Association Convention (question mark there because Iâm not 100% sure of the circumstances behind it).
This particular paper is only three pages long, so Iâm sure itâs a summary of a more lengthy article - if someone knows of a longer version, please let me know.
From the introduction:
This study juxtaposes two alternative approaches to understanding the results obtained in Tarot reading: the paranormal and the non-paranormal. People consult advisors using different means of divination and claim that the insights they are supplied with are accurate. The assumption behind this experiment was that if this is true, the participant should give higher ratings to a real reading in terms of overall relevance compared with a control reading.
The Results and Discussion and Effect of Belief on Rating sections were particularly interesting to me. Check out the paper [HERE] ... archived version [here] in case the original disappears.
