Electors of the Holy Roman Empire Signed the Agreement of Rhense Confirming Emperor Louis IV
On July 16, 1338, the six Electors of the Holy Roman Empire signed the Agreement of Rhense, a major declaration that strengthened the authority of Emperor Louis IV of Bavaria and challenged the influence of the papacy over imperial elections. The agreement was made at Rhense, a traditional meeting place of the German princes along the Rhine River.
The electors declared that a man chosen as King of the Romans by the majority of the electors did not require papal approval to exercise imperial authority. This statement directly opposed the long-standing claim of the popes that they had the right to approve or reject the ruler of the Holy Roman Empire.
The agreement was an important moment in the ongoing struggle between the Holy Roman Emperors and the papacy. Louis IV had faced opposition from Pope John XXII, who refused to recognize his rule, but the Declaration of Rhense helped establish the principle that the empire’s authority came from its own political institutions rather than from the Church.
The Agreement of Rhense became a landmark in the development of the Holy Roman Empire’s constitutional traditions, emphasizing the power of the German electors and the independence of imperial politics.
