The Palace Where Marie Antoinette Tried to Forget She Was Queen
Life at the Palace of Versailles was a dazzling spectacle, but for Queen Marie Antoinette, it was also exhausting. Every moment of her day was governed by strict court etiquette, with servants and nobles constantly watching her every move. Seeking an escape from the endless ceremonies and rigid expectations, she retreated to the Petit Trianon, a small château on the Versailles estate that had been gifted to her by King Louis XVI in 1774.
At the Petit Trianon, Marie Antoinette created a more relaxed world where only invited guests were welcome. She entertained close friends, enjoyed music and theater, and later commissioned the nearby Hameau de la Reine ("The Queen's Hamlet"), a picturesque model village where she could stroll through gardens and experience an idealized version of rural life. Although critics claimed she was pretending to be a simple peasant, she was not actually living as one—the hamlet was an elegant retreat designed for leisure rather than authentic farm work.
The queen's private sanctuary soon became the subject of gossip. Its renovations and furnishings were expensive, though the often-repeated claim that the Petit Trianon alone cost two million francs is difficult to verify and likely exaggerates the cost of improvements over several years. Because access was tightly restricted, rumors flourished about extravagant parties, secret meetings, and hidden romances. While many of these stories were exaggerated or entirely fabricated, they damaged Marie Antoinette's already fragile public image and contributed to the perception that she was an out-of-touch queen in the years leading up to the French Revolution.
Well, I'll be crossing an ocean of time (again) to be back in Paris (three times in three years, they should give me a house for being a frequent visitor) looking mostly like that, so that I can see Versailles play live next Saturday... If anyone sees me there please pinch me, so that I remember I'm not dreaming...
Found a photo of an old(er) sketch in my gallery. Of course, made by my roommate!
Birth of Marie Sophie Hélène Béatrix: The Lost Princess of France
On July 9, 1786, Marie Sophie Hélène Béatrix of France was born at the Palace of Versailles. She was the fourth child and second daughter of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, arriving during a period when the French monarchy still stood at the center of European power.
Sadly, the young princess lived only a few months, dying in June 1787 before she reached her first birthday. Her brief life came just two years before the French Revolution would transform France forever, and her story remains a poignant reminder of the personal tragedies experienced by the royal family during one of history’s most turbulent eras.

Capturing the stillness of the interiors at Versailles. The light here is incredible, hitting the gold leaf and heavy textiles with a specific natural softness. Shot on the Fujifilm X-T5, dialing in the film emulation to deepen the shadows and pull those rich, moody tones from the royal chambers without losing the intricate detail.
