He didn’t have it at first. When he was younger and everything seemed so easy. However when he got older he could hear the others cry sometimes and that is when he decided to do it. Instead of wearing the cardigan like normal people would, he tied it over his shoulders. It made him feel like a hero, like Superman who always saved the day from evil masterminds. But he saved them from darkness. It had worked, for most of them. Like when Roman was crying because Thomas fell before a show and couldn’t perform. Or when Logan was sad because of some reason Patton couldn’t remember. Or the times when he just sat and calmed Virgil down. But still Patton felt like he did something wrong. The others still cried, Virgil still didn’t smile so much as Patton wanted. That was when the thoughts came. He wasn’t a hero, he couldn’t be a hero. He couldn’t save them from sadness like Superman could save the world. He wasn’t good enough for it. All he could do was to look at himself with a bright smile that slowly became a sob. He quickly took off the cardigan and threw it in the trash. He was lucky that nobody was home. Roman came back with food talking fast about Disney with Virgil as Logan walked behind mostly listening. No one saw at first and they started to pack up the food. It wasn’t until Logan walked back to the living room when he saw it. “Where is Patton?” Was the first thing that came out from his mouth. “Maybe in his room looking at puppy videos again” Roman said uninterested. “Then why is Patton’s cardigan in the trash?” The other two rushed out to see Logan holding a slightly dirty grey cardigan in his hand. “Oh no.” Patton knew that if he cried, nobody would come. Nobody of the sides would come running into his room, sitting on his bed and comforting him. Just like he always did with the others. If he wasn’t a hero then he would be somebody that a hero would save. But why didn’t the hero come? “PATTON!” He was apparently wrong. The door was kicked in by Roman and he could hear the others run to him. He could feel how the bed sank down, how his head lifted up before placing down on somebody’s legs. Someone laid down and cuddled close to him. When he opened his eyes to see Logan looking worried down at him. On his side Virgil was hugging him and on the floor with a hand on his cheek was Roman. “What’s wrong Patt?” Roman asked softly. “I… I’m not a hero” it was a small hoarse whisper. “What do you mean with that?” Still Roman. “I wanted to be a hero… With my cardigan… I felt like a hero but… you keep crying and… I can’t be a hero” tears was threatening to fall as he spoke. And all he could feel was Virgil hugging him tighter, Logan playing with his hair and Roman stroke the tears away.
