The Poem of the Soul. Divine Generation
Artist: Louis Janmot (French, 1814-1892)
Date: ca. 1844-1845
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Museum of Fine Arts Lyon, Lyon, France
Description
"Divine Generation" is the opening scene in Louis Janmot's 18-part series "The Poem of the Soul" (Le Poème de l'âme), depicting the creation of a new human soul in heaven. It portrays a mystical, radiant paradise where the infant soul is surrounded by angels, the Holy Trinity, and a maternal figure representing divine love, marking the start of the soul's journey to Earth.
The Liberality of Titus (Allegory of the Liberality of Louis XIII and Cardinal Richelieu) by Jacques Stella, ca. 1637-1638, Harvard Art Museums, Fogg Museum (oil on canvas, 191 x 146.2 cm, inv. 1972.362).
This painting was commissioned for the overmantel in the king's study. The canvas allusively depicts the generosity of King Louis XIII of France (1601-1643), who appears as the Roman Emperor Titus (39-81) distributing gifts. The man in the red toga supporting him bears the features of the cardinal. Beneath the podium, the celebration recalls the bacchanalia of Andrea Mantegna and Nicolas Poussin.

2 Corinthians 9:10-11 (NKJV) - Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God.
Richard's constantly reiterated professions of liberality, generosity and open-handedness had disintegrated on contact with the realities of kingship.
