Funeral banner of Eustachy Kurcz

Eustachy Litwinowicz Kurcz (d. 1647) was castellan of Vitebsk from 1639 to 1647, in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (now Belarus). In Syanno, near Vitebsk, he and his wife Raina (Regina), née Wołłowicz, founded a Franciscan monastery and church in 1609. Similarly, with his third wife, Zuzanna, née Tyszkiewicz, he founded a Franciscan monastery and church in Grodno in 1635. The banner, made in 1648, is part of the collection of the Moscow Kremlin Museums (oil and gold on damask and velvet, 160 x 120 cm, inv. 3N-327). The Latin inscription on the reverse confirms the identity of the donor depicted on the obverse (DOM / PIISSIMIS MANIBVS ILLVSTRISSIMI DOMINI / EVSTACHII LITWINOWICZ KVRCZ CASTELLANI / WITEBSCESIS: […] ANNO M. DC XL. VIII).

Silesian Cranachiana: Epitaph of canon Lorentz Potschel (Laurentius Potschel, d. 1539) with the scene of the Expulsion of the merchants from the Temple by Silesian follower of Lucas Cranach the Elder, 1540s, Archdiocesan Museum in Wrocław (oil on panel, 182 x 130 cm). Originally in the Romanesque church of Saint Giles (święty Idzi, heilige Ägidius) in Wrocław (after "Führer durch das Erzbischöfl. Diözesanmuseum in Breslau" by Alfons Nowack, p. 53, item 175).

Venus and Adonis by Venetian painter (?), 17th century, Wilanów Palace in Warsaw (oil on canvas, 152.5 x 235.5 cm, inv. Wil.1578). From the collection of Princess Izabela Lubomirska née Czartoryska (1736-1816), called the "Blue Marquise", described in the 1793 inventory as "Venus, Adonis, and Cupid holding a spear".

Portrait of the poet Vincent Voiture (1597-1648) as Saint Louis IX of France (1214-1270) by Philippe de Champaigne

Queen Marie Louise Gonzaga (1611-1667), known for her love of poetry, wished to bring Vincent Voiture, the most eminent French poet of the Précieuses style, to her court in Warsaw, but without success. Before her arrival in Poland, Voiture accompanied Marie Louise to the French borders as a marshal on behalf of the king. A magnificent portrait of the poet by Philippe de Champaigne is preserved in the Saint Louis Art Museum (oil on canvas, 68 x 56.9 cm, inv. 719:1961). Identification of the sitter by Marcin Latka (Artinpl).

Silesian Cranachiana: Allegory of the Reformed Church by Silesian follower of Lucas Cranach the Younger, ca. 1570, Archdiocesan Museum in Wrocław (tempera and oil on panel).

The painting depicts Martin Luther preaching and Philipp Melanchthon hearing confession. The figures include contemporary nobility, including the von Zedlitz family. The background contains Passion and Paschal elements: rocks with crosses and the resurrection of Christ (after "Führer durch das Erzbischöfl. Diözesanmuseum in Breslau" by Alfons Nowack, p. 55, item 197). The painter was undoubtedly inspired by the works of Cranach to create the effigies of the reformers.

The painting was originally located in a church in Nowy Kościół in the Złotoryja district (Nova ecclesia, Neukirch bei Falkenhain, Kr. Schönau). The village likely dates back to the Middle Ages and was the seat of the von Zedlitz family, who owned a castle there. In the 16th century, Nowy Kościół was the center of Lutheranism in Silesia. The parish of Neukirch was among the first to embrace the Reformation. On September 12, 1518, Georg von Zedlitz appointed Melchior Hoffmann (or Hofmann ca. 1495 - ca. 1543), a disciple of the reformer Martin Luther and probably the first Lutheran preacher in Silesia, as head of the local church.
