Reading Khmer Script แแแแแแแธ 3
I am back. And now we're going to learn about subconsonants because they come up frequently in Khmer.
What's that?
Subconsonants --- or แแพแแขแแแแ (jerng 'aksar) which literally means "foot letters" --- are consonants that combine with other consonants to make longer sounds.
For example,
แ (k) + แแ (sub n) = แแแ (kn)
แแแแถ (knea) means "everyone"
The regular version of แแ looks like แ (no)
Every consonant has a foot version. Here they are:
*PS there's 33 consonants so in case that's too many, just focus on the few that I randomly embiggened for you
แ -> แแ

แ (chho) -> แแ
แ (nho) -> แแ
แ (da) -> แแ
แ (dha) -> แแ *the more accurate transliteration is "tha" but I'm writing it this way so it doesn't get mixed up with แ, which you'll learn later
แ (do) -> แแ
แ (dho) -> แแ *usually written as tho but again I don't want to cause a mix up with แ
แ (na) -> แแ
แ (ta) -> แแ
แ (tha) -> แแ
แ (to) -> แแ
แ (tho) -> แแ

แ (ba) -> แแ

แ (lo) -> แแ
แ (vo) -> แแ
แ (sa) -> แแ
แ (ha) -> แแ
แก (la) -> แแก *you'll almost never see this one so don't worry, but yeah it looks exactly like แ (to) + แแ (sub b) for some reason. I have no idea why
แข ('a) -> แแข
Words you can spell with the embiggened letters + what you've already learned!!
แแแแถ = chma (cat)
แแแแถแ = kmean (none)
แขแแแแ = 'aksar (letter)
Now I'm not going to give you the pronunciation, just the translation. Try to read and figure out the pronunciation. Later, click to see the answers.
