Hello tumblr, ‼️I NEED BETA READERS‼️ Specifically a black woman and a Cambodian/Khmer person to check my rep of the mcs.
It’s the first in a YA portal fantasy romance trilogy about two estranged childhood best friends who are called back to the magical world they went to as children despite their rocky relationship. There’s queer rep, adventure, romance, fantasy creatures, the power of friendship, found family, and a unique fantasy world! The blurb is further down if you’re intrigued!
I’ve done my research and have a good idea of what to avoid in terms of rep, but I need someone to check my work! I would also love incorporating any ideas you have to make it more true to life (such as kinship terms, traditions, struggles, or anything else people outside of those cultures wouldn’t know about unless they were explicitly told). It’s casual representations, but I want it to feel realistic and relatable enough that readers with those identities feel represented. I won’t be satisfied with it until people of those identities tell me it works!
You’ll like it if you like Seanan McQuire’s Wayward Children series, In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan, Narnia, or other similar things.
So if you have one of the listed identities and you’re interested, message me! No previous beta reader experience needed and you don’t need to be an experienced writer (or a writer at all!). All you need to do is answer some questions and tell me your thoughts/reactions to the story as you read. You would have several months to read it and tell me what you think.
Book stats for those who want to know more: A Shimmering Patch of Sky, the first in a YA portal fantasy romance trilogy. Currently sitting at 108k words.
Blurb:
Childhood best friends Rosie and Leu lived out a classic story: the twelve-year-olds found a portal to a magical world called Fairfottine and helped fight the evil Queen of the Fever and her army of zombies. Now that the war is over and they’ve come home, it’s time for their happily ever after.
Right?
When Fairfottine summons the two back at eighteen, Rosie is eager to return. A perpetual oddball in her community, a magical world where she’s a warrior—the only one capable of wielding a special ancient weapon—was her dream come true. But something changed after their return, and not only Leu is unwilling to come, he’s unwilling to acknowledge their first adventure or even speak with her for more than a minute at a time.
Fairfottine will not be denied, and the two are drawn in for another adventure— one they have to put aside their years worth of resentment to complete.
Interested? Hit me up! I’d love to have your help!

I’m tempted to rewrite some of my old Percy Jackson OCs
Especially Bopha Keo, my first OC who was the same ethnicity as me.
Like, I had this idea of making her a love interest that’s also Khmer and they do cute shit like serenade each other in Khmer and have Khmer inside jokes like “Plums from the unknowing neighbor’s tree just hits different”
We fine outchea
