Kven girl fetching water, Finnmark, 1898
Kvens are a Finnic ethnic and language minority in Norway. Kvens have lived in Northern Norway at least since the 16th century, but most immigrated in the 18th century. The Kven dialect developed for a long period more or less independently from Finnish and the differences are now so big that they are classified as different languages. The Kven language incorporate many Norwegian loanwords, and Finnish words that are no longer used in Finland. Kvens are officially recognized as a national minority.
