Japanese Hairstyles: Historical Overview Part 02: Women’s Hairstyles of the Edo Period, Part 02
Hairstyle Name: Kottai Aoi-tabo Osafune (古体 葵髱 長舟) lit. “Old Style - Hollyhock Leaves Back-Hair Long Boat”
This variation of Osafune is a definite fusion between two distinct styles of Osafune, the Kottai and the Aoi-tabo. The tabo of this model has clearly been formed into the Hollyhock shape, however, the sidelock hair (bin) has not been combed into a smooth disk to join the tabo. Just like the kottai Osafune, the bin are distinctly separate from the tabo and have been formed into the large wide bin of that kottai style.
What these combined features could mean for the wearer in intriguing. The Aoi-tabo style was commonly worn by the daughters of aristocrats and the kottai was specifically worn by tayu-rank courtesans when performing during a formal tea ceremony so as not to distract the audience from the beauty of the tea ceremony itself.
