I was wondering are Tayuu regulated to what fabrics or textiles they may wear, aside from the scarlet red color to signify their class. Any patterns or other colors specific to them?
In all old Japan history, and especially during Edo period, all people had to follow sumptuary rules dictated by power on hold. The thing is we don't truly know how much those rules were actually followed! Many new trends actually appeared because people found a way around them so ;)
About tayuu themselves, I am not learned enough about yuukaku specificities :( On top of the head, I'd say they chose pretty classical references where geisha chose more novelty ones for ex. (that the noh vs kabuki culture shock). But take that with a grain of salt!
Having a more specific time period+place would help too as fashion changed a lot during tayuu's time, from their rise to disappeareance.

Explanation: Itâs amazing, since her character was most likely NOT designed to be aesthetically pleasing, but her outfit is near perfect in terms of accuracy! Regarding kimono, it looks pretty spot on. The black uchikake with white dango rings is a sharp contrast to the warm pale colors of the nagagi kimono. That shiny gold border on the topmost pink kimono is very inaccurate; however, the placement of the collars and number of layers are excellent! Her obi seems to be in a more informal butterfly musubi on the front of her body, which is fairly accurate as Oiran were known to wear both. While I canât really see the back of the figurine, the nihongami also looks fairly accuracte as well! The color is really striking and actually looks super elegant with the orangish plum blossoms and the golden hairpins and kushi. Overall, it looks great!

Explanation: Definitely not the worst! The overall silhouette is pretty accurate, even if they took some large liberties. The layering effect with the 3 tickly padded hems is lovely! The actual kimono layers are also lovely near the obi front and the pulled back collars, although sheâs wearing the kimono in the incorrect off-the-shoulder style. The color and patterns of the kimono designs are intricate and bold, perfect for an oiran to catch and keep your attention. Big negative is the furisode sleeves; only furisode-shinzo and kamuro wear them.Â
The obi appears to be a version of an oiranâs manaita obi, but the big bow on top seems to be a reference to a kabuki character, Yatsuhashi-oiran, but itâs not nearly as well done. Her footwear is accurate with the lack of tabi and giant koma-geta. Her hair is far too short to be worn in an accurate style, but at least they tried to go for the sheer volume of the traditional style. Lots of hanakanzashi, bira-bira, combs, pine needle kanzashi, red tama-kanzashi, and even a giant tri-layered tri-colored kanzashi with a massive gold & silver braided bow. At least the spirit of extravagance lives on.

The warm orange oiran kimono covered in a flower pattern looks exquisite draped off of Darkness' shoulders. Her hand is gently propped up by a purple and white paper umbrella while her hair is tied with several pins. Her drawn back hairstyle provides a clear view of her beautiful eye makeup and choker. And all of this sexiness and cuteness is compacted by Darkness' white thigh high stockings, which look long and statuesque thanks to her raised geta sandals!

Explanation: I realize Iâm giving this the same score as the first furisode-shinzo figure, but Iâd rate this one as the worse of the two! So terrible. Starting with her kimono, sheâs, at least, wearing two full layers: the purple nagajuban and the orange furisode kimono on top. However, the kimono doesnât have a padded hem and sheâs also not really âwearingâ it. The front opening is very high and wide, while her collars are being worn in the incorrect off-the-shoulder style. Not to mention that the orange kimono above the obi has a thick purple tomoeri, which is super weird.
The obi musubi isnât bad, but itâs a plain red color and looks very sloppy and wrinkled. Thereâs no way to get a bow that big to keep shape and position with an obi made of fabric that soft! Whatâs more, sheâs also wearing a purple shigoki obi, which is something to be used to HOLD UP the hem of a kimono. What purpose does that purple shigoki have?! Lastly, her footwear is ridiculous. The thigh-high tabi are OBVIOUSLY not accurate, but whatâs weirder is the implied meaning. By wearing tabi, sheâs hinting at her sexual unavailability, but by the rest of her outfit, youâd think sheâd just finished with a prior client. So little coordination and planning, itâs sad.
From Bandai comes this Ichibansho Figure of "Pirate Empress" Boa Hancock from One Piece. Measuring 9", she stands in a floral kimono with a sheer layer over the top as she brushes back her hair decorated with pink hair adornments. Of course, she is also wearing her iconic gold snake earrings. As usual, she looks like the most beautiful woman in the world. Add the "Snake Princess" to your collection! đ

Explanation: On first glance, this figurine looks quite good for a furisode-shinzo, but Iâm afraid the devil is in the details. Her kimono has a gorgeous pattern and a striking sakura pink padded trailing hem. The same pink nagajuban shows at the collar and sleeve openings. However, that nagajuban seems to disappear below the waist; there should be another layer opening around her legs. The collar is on her shoulders (as it should be), but should be placed farther away from her neck. Her sheer overkimono is a lovely touch!Â
The obi musubi is correct for her rank and has a pretty, contrasting geometric pattern to visually balance the soft stripes & roses from her kimono. For a shinzo, her wearing of tabi and raised geta is questionable. In the Yoshiwara, shinzo before 1760 werenât sexually available to clients, but they were afterwards. I would find it strange for her to be wearing tabi (which imply sheâs unavailable) with raised koma geta (which seems to display her unavailability). Not to mention, sheâs clearly a grown woman, which makes it weird to think she hasnât already taken on clients or, at the very least, already lost her virginity i.e. respectability.
Lastly, her hair is obviously not accurate for a furisode-shinzo, even if she were off duty. Her weird pink shidare strands on either side of her head also look strange.
From Bandai comes this Ichibansho Figure of Komurasaki (Kozuki Hiyori) from One Piece. Measuring 9", she stands elegantly in a beautiful floral kimono with ornate adornments of gold pins and delicate flowers in hair while holding a coordinating folding fan. Explanation: Excellent! The kimono silhouette and collar are mostly correct. For an oiran, her collars should be more pulled away from her neck, but I really appreciate that theyâre all on her shoulders, where they should be! The number of layers is very nice as well as the heavy use of red in the kimono designs. Iâm also loving the attention given to the outer kimonoâs (I hesitate to call it an uchikake) construction. Thereâs an obvious center back seam, the collar pieces are not different colors from the body, and the shoulder seam is halfway down her arm; just as it should be! The giant yellow bow musubi has an excellent geometric pattern on it and seems to be modeled on musubi worn by Meiji period oiran within their brothels.Â
Her hairstyle is outstandingly accurate! Sheâs got maegami (i.e. bang bump), sheâs got bin (i.e side-bang wings), sheâs even got the giant pointed split mage (i.e. topknot)! Her selection of hairpins, dangling pins, flower kanzashi, golden knot ties and combs are outstanding and fairly realistic, too! Only negative is her wearing tabi; Oiran were infamous for always going barefoot, regardless of the weather!
