Hairstyle Name: Toujin-mage (唐人髷) lit. “Chinese Topknot”

   This hairstyle is a variation of momoware and was worn from the late Edo period to the Meiji. This style was introduced by the courtesans and kamuro of the Yoshiwara, although it would eventually become a common hairstyle among 12-18 year old town girls. Kamuro would use very gorgeous kanzashi, while town girls would use more frugal decorations.

Hairstyle Name: Tsubushi Shimada (つぶし島田) lit. “Crushed Rice Paddy Island”

    This hairstyle is a variation of the Shimada-mage established during the Tenpo period (1830-1844 CE) in the Edo era. It was a huge trend at that time, especially between yuujo and brothel owners. There's no cushion at the root of the tail, so the tail appears to have been “crushed.” Such a style was recognized as “iki,” or chic, and considered the opposite of the “taka-shimada.”

Historical Time Period: Mid-Edo Period - 2nd Half (1753-1789)

Hairstyle Name: Otoko Genroku (男元禄) lit. “Genroku Man”

     This hairstyle is different from its sibling style, the Onna Genroku, in that the topmost gathering of hair is styled in a tall, shaku-like pattern, compared to that of the female style. These hairstyles are a reference to the loud, flamboyant gender-fluid style of fashion during the Genroku period of Japanese history, a time when men and women dressed so alike you couldn’t always tell them apart on sight.
