Elle left. Gideon disappeared. Emilyâs gone. Hotch is suspended.
Itâs just the four of them: JJ, Morgan, Reid, and Garcia. Theyâre taken off the active duty roster until a new Unit Chief is appointed. It wonât be Morgan. Strauss doesnât trust anyone on their team. Whoever gets the job will be coming straight out of her pocket.
Theyâre in Garciaâs room discussing this when Morgan stands, swears, and punches a wall. Reid jumps. Garcia yells at Morgan to watch his fists. JJ doesnât blink.
Two days later, sheâs turned in her resignation. Morgan doesnât last a week after she leaves before heâs packed his bags, too. With only a matter of days before Reid and Garcia are assigned to different BAU teams, two more exit interviews hit Straussâ desk.
Reid finds himself sitting alone in his apartment, go bag still at his feet and satchel in his lap where he dropped them when he came home yesterday. He canât regret what heâs done, even though he knows he should. He should be worried about money, should be looking for a new job, should be wondering how heâs going to keep his head above water now that the ground has dropped out from under him.
Instead of doing any of that, he stands up, taking his go bag and his satchel with him (funny, his fingers are still curled around both), and walks out of his apartment.
A moment later, he darts back inside, pulls a seemingly random book off his shelves, and shakes out the eight hundred and thirty dollars that had been tucked between the pages. Heâs been saving it for an emergency. This seems to qualify.
He takes a cab to Morganâs house, because somehow the thought of climbing into his own car is repulsive. When he arrives, he pounds on the door. âMorgan, I know youâre in there, I can see your car. Derek!â
Thereâs no response. He sighs. âIâll come in anyways. I will!â
When Morgan still doesnât answer (even though Reid imagines he can hear him breathing just on the other side of the door), he feels around the door frame for the key he knows is taped there. Itâs not there, and itâs not under the welcome mat or either of the window sills, either. With another sigh, Reid fishes a pin out of his bag and picks the lock.
âWhat the hell,â Morgan says from his place on the couch when Reid calmly steps in and shuts the door behind him.
âMagicianâs fingers,â Reid tells him. âHave you heard from anyone else? No one will answer my calls.â
Morgan scowls at him, clearly miffed about Reidâs presence and the fact that he more or less broke in, but then shakes his head. âGarcia wonât even text me back.â
âRight,â Reid says, âwe need to find Emily first; sheâs the most likely to leave the country. Come on.â
Morgan just snorts. âWhatâs the point in finding her, kid? The teamâs not getting back together at this point.â
And suddenly, itâs like he pulls up short, unable to formulate a response. He doesnât know what the point is, he just knows that there is something terribly, horribly wrong with all of them going their separate ways at once. âI, I donât,â he stammers. âWe canât justâŚâ
Then Morgan is there, hands gripping Reidâs shoulders and bending a little so he can look up at him. âBreathe, Spencer.â
He does, easily. The problem isnât that he canât breathe. Itâs that for the first time in his life, he canât think. He doesnât know how to explain himself, doesnât know how to tell Morgan about the desperate, cloying fear that rises up in his throat when he thinks about being alone again. Instead of trying, he says, âIf you pick up Garcia, I can go get Emily and JJ, and we can meet at Hotchâs.â
Morgan looks at him, considering. âHow âbout you come with me, instead? If youâre right and Emilyâs getting ready to leave, it would probably be better if thereâs the both of us there.â
âYeah.â Something clenched up tight in his chest loosens a little, and he huffs out a noise that could maybe be a laugh. âThat would probably be good.â
They go to Emilyâs first, because something tells Reid that sheâs leaving soon, and if they donât catch her in time sheâll be gone for good and theyâll never find her again.
What they find is her in the parking lot of her building, throwing two suitcases into the trunk of her car. She stares at them like she has no idea who they are when they climb out of Morganâs car. Reidâs never seen her so lost before.
He tries to think of every reason she should stay, pulls up every argument and all the logic he has in him, but what he says is, âPlease donât go.â
Sheâs hugging him before heâs finished speaking, and he tucks his head down so he can hide his tears in her hair.
JJ is at Garciaâs, and the two of them are curled up on the sofa watching some reality show that Reid doesnât recognize. JJâs eyes are red, and Garciaâs hair doesnât look like itâs seen a brush in days. Neither of them hesitates to come with them. Reid doesnât think any of them know what theyâre doing anymore, and maybe putting the group of them together is a bad idea when theyâre so lost and drifting, but he thinks that the world will chew them all to pieces if they donât stay close to each other to fight it off.
When they get to Hotchâs, heâs the only one who looks like heâs still surviving in the the world under his own power, even if the circles under his eyes are darker than usual and Reid swears there werenât that many lines on his face a month ago.
âWhat the hell?â he asks calmly, when he sees the five of them standing there, disheveled (Reid), with messy hair (Garcia), and in pajamas (JJ). Emily is clearly dressed to travel, and Morgan is sober at the moment but he smells like stale beer.
They shuffle around on the doorstep, no one quite sure what to say. Reid finds that heâs holding hands with JJ and Emily and he canât quite remember when that happened.
Hotch steps back to let them in, and they troop past him and make themselves uncomfortable in the living room. Reid is sitting in between JJ and Emily on the sofa, and now theyâre holding hands too, in a messy tangle of fingers in his lap. Garcia takes the recliner, Morgan perches on the armrest, and Hotch sits on the coffee table facing them all.
Thereâs silence for several minutes.
âYou all left the BAU,â Hotch says after it becomes clear that no one else is going to start the conversation. âI know that.â
âEmily then JJ then Morgan then Garcia then me,â Reid says. âHave you heard from Gideon?â
Hotch shakes his head. âHeâs in the wind. For his sake, Iâm not going to try to find him.â
Emily and JJ both move in closer when he shrinks back into the cushions. âRight. Of course.â
Another few minutes of silence, and then Garcia speaks. âSo this is going to make me sound terribly pathetic and un-adjusted,â she says hesitantly, âbut just what day is it?â
âSaturday,â Hotch says, at the same time Emily says, âFriday.â
âItâs Saturday?â she asks, blinking. âDamn it, I missed my flight.â
âWhere were you going, anyways?â Morgan asks her, sounding just barely curious. Reid thinks heâs probably just trying to keep someone talking to beat back that painful, creeping silence.
âFrance,â Emily says. âGonna go visit some friends. Or, was going to. Is it really Saturday?â
âYou lost time?â JJ asks, biting her lip as she leans around Reid to peer at Emily. Emily shakes her head with a wry smile.
âThe entire last three weeks have sort of blurred together. I think Iâm still struggling to process.â
âYou donât have to go,â Reid says, and it surprises him how quiet and hoarse his voice is. What surprises him even more are the words that come out next:Â âWe donât have to work for the FBI to keep doing our job.â
Even the silence seems to surprised to jump in. No one says anything, but itâs not quiet like it was before, and Reid realizes that they all knew thatâs why theyâre here, and that theyâve all just been waiting for someone else to say it.
âThatâs true,â Hotch says, his voice even and calm. âThough we rely a great deal on help from local law enforcement, which we wouldnât be getting without the FBI behind us.â
âBut weâre always the ones who always take down the unsub,â Morgan points out. âRegardless of how helpful the local cops are.â
âAnd sometimes theyâre more of a hindrance than a help,â JJ mutters.
âHey, I can do my job just as well from my own laptop,â Garcia adds. âEven if I wonât, um, technically have permission to access the things that I usually do.â
âLook, Iâm either doing this or Iâm living off my motherâs money and pissing around in Europe,â Emily says dryly.
âWe wouldnât have the jet,â Hotch tells them. âNo government vehicles. No funds. No paychecks, for that matter; I doubt any of us could hold down any other job while we did this.â
âIt doesnât matter,â JJ says fiercely, her fingers digging into Reidâs and Emilyâs. âPeople will die without us, Hotch. Weâll find a way to make it work.â
âOther people will still be doing the job,â Hotch says, not seeming at all put off by how angry JJ is. âWe werenât the only BAU team.â
âNo, but we were the best.â Morganâs voice is low and quiet and firm. Itâs not quite the same voice he uses when heâs trying to coax a confession out of a suspect, but itâs so close that Reid almost jumps. âWe are the best.â
There's another pause, quiet but not silent. Reid tries not to count the seconds. Everyone tries to look at everyone else without seeming like they are. Reid keeps his eyes trained on Hotch, almost afraid to breathe.
"All right," he says finally, and all eyes snap back to him. "Let's do it."

moon lilith and libra?
moon: do you have problem with trust? In a way. It takes me a while to warm up to people, I donât make many close friends quickly. I have to learn them and trust them before I feel like I can divulge.
lilith:Â what's your biggest turn on in someone?I like...desire. The intimacy of someone wanting you, reacting to you- itâs kind of like a drug.
libra:Â what's your favorite make up brand?Probably Tarte. Theyâre all natural ingredients, so itâs a lot kinder to my skin than most makeup, and they have a great line. But I also love Dr.Jart for BB Cream, which I use instead of foundation.
send me a placement!
8 27 37 44 54 and 55?
8.Do you like bubble bath?
They donât do much for me anymore. I loved them when I was little, but the joy is gone now. Plus, bathtubs tend to be too small for me to sit in comfortably, anyways.
27.First thing you notice to a guy/girl?
Um, attitude, I guess? Like, Iâm of the opinion that every single person on the planet is super hot, so nothing much tends to stand out to me. I guess I notice the most colorful part of their person, whether thatâs clothes, hair, jewelry, tattoos... But mostly I notice their expression, how theyâre standing, the way they talk. I make snap judgments.
37.Do you believe in ghosts?
Not in the traditional sense. I donât go for the whole âunfinished business, dead people appearing in photographsâ thing, but I canât entirely discount people who say theyâve felt the presence of their loved ones after they died. I donât know, I feel like you go to heaven or hell after death and thatâs it. (Although I am willing to be convinced about purgatory)
44.Can you curl your tongue?
I wish.
54.Tattoos OR no tattoos?
All the tattoos, on me and everyone else.
55.Quiet stay-at-home type OR party type?
Hahahahahaha I hate going places and I especially hate parties. Very much rather stay at home.
You have derma? I have derma too! I was rly surprised when I found out it was a medical disorder- i thought i was just some weird kid who picked ( strangely enough screaming at me to just stop picking makes it worsee ) anyway good luck with the derma!
thanks <33 yeah, i thought it was just a weird stress thing as well, but iâve had it for as long as i can remember and itâs been causing me lots of anxiety/i got bullied a lot over it
