Indie surf rock lover? Check this!!

Kioea's newest EP, Electric Surf, is a radiant fusion of surf rock, psychedelia, and Eastern music influences. Frontwoman Carand Burnet finds her muse in the transcendent sounds of the sitar and tanpura, which elevate her electric guitar melodies. Expect the driving beats and catchy hooks of the band's previous compositions, complemented by spacious moments.

Listening to genre-defying albums like Alice Coltrane's "Journey in Satchidananda" and The Moody Blues' "In Search of the Lost Chord " shaped the creation of Electric Surf. These albums, along with studying North Indian Classical Raga singing, inspired Burnet to incorporate atmospheric layers of tanpura and vocals into the EP.

A commitment to the healing properties of music, instilled through Eastern spiritual practices, has motivated Burnet to create Electric Surf. The artist is grateful to channel this energy in the company of new band members and bring this sound to a broader audience.

Burnet adds: "Music and its mystical vibrations are a healing force. In discovering my singing voice, everything serendipitously came together to create Electric Surf."

Gaze upon my magnificent spiky-pantalooned children, the Kioea / Bristle-thighed Curlew (Numenius tahitiensis)!

A near-threatened species known to breed in only two locales of Alaska, on the lower Yukon River and the Seward Peninsula. They then fly ±5,000-13,000km / ±3,000-8,000mi (usually non-stop!) south to overwinter on remote tropical Pacific Islands.

This includes Midway Atoll (Northwestern Hawaiian Archipelago), where I had the honour of working with these amazing shorebirds. The curlews we banded/ringed & satellite/GPS tagged are still being tracked/monitored as part of long-term studies, & they contributed to important research on their genetics, diet/prey choice across their wintering grounds, toxicant exposure, attraction + deterrence methods, & rehabilitation/captive care needs, that will all aid in their conservation.
