the little stint is a small shorebird with a wide range across europe, africa, and asia (as well as being rare vagrants to north america). the sexes are visually identical, with adults in full breeding plumage displaying rusty orange coloration on the head, neck, and upperparts; they are typically brightest during late summer. juveniles are similar, but with more pale coloration, and often display bold white barring down the back. nonbreeding little stints are pale gray-brown overall. they can be found both in freshwater habitats and brackish wetlands, where they feed by picking small invertebrates, along with crustaceans and mollusks, out of mud and shallow waters. they are often found feeding in flocks, sometimes joining mixed-species groups to forage.
