Like, Beru Whitesun. Soon to be Beru Lars, aunt and guardian of Luke Skywalker.
And now I canât stop thinking about Beru Whitesun, 20-something-year-old spearhead of the Tatooine abolitionist movement, a force to be reckoned with, this absolute brilliant hurricane of social change. Sneaking into Mos Espa at night, breaking in and disabling slave tracking chips, leading the people out of the city and loading them with credits and safe passage offworld. Owen and Beruâs moisture farm as a point on Tatooineâs Underground Railroad, or a meeting place for others working for the movement.
And then give me Luke who grew up at abolitionist protests. Luke sneaking downstairs at night to listen in on the meetings happening in the kitchen, where others fighting for justice speak in hushed tones. Luke making friends with the children who used to be slaves while they hide out in his home, their safe-house, inviting them to share his toys and his clothes and his bed. Luke growing up with a heart for justice, working to end the cruelty his father was born into and his mother fought in the Senate to oppose, even without knowing it.
It's such a tiny line in Queen's Shadow, but it feel like it couldn't be a coincidence - that detail is a deliberate choice made by the author and I am HEADCANONING SO HARD. Beru Whitesun Lars, abolitionist leader. Hell yeah.
skdfjskj this is ABSURD to try to narrow down BUT. in no particular order:
The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi
This book basically unravels the mystery of how Vivek Oji died, and explores the lives of a group of queer youths in Nigeria - and the core of the story is the dual experience of wanting to "truly" express oneself while also not being out for the sake of safety, which as someone in a relatively similar situation made me want to scream because the experience is captured so WELL UGH
The Shadow King by Maaza Mengiste
This is such EXCELLENT historical fiction - it talks about the involvement of women in the Italian invasion on Ethiopia as soldiers, spies, etc. and examines the dynamics between them on levels of station, power, allyship, etc. It's so SO SO well written and researched, I finished the entire thing in one sitting
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
I'll be honest I was putting this one off for a WHILE now and finally got to it after seeing your posts about it skfdjsk, the spirit of greek tragedies is alive and well in this one T_T
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
Another one I've kind of been putting off, and haven't watched the show for - the entire book is naturally fantastic and then there's the EPILOGUE which breaks the narrative style into like an academic conference at least a century or two in the future which. HOLY SHIT
The Sandman: Overture by Neil Gaiman
This is technically a six-issue comic run but ssshhh they're good they're so good!!! Not going into this too much bc Sandman spoilers but it's basically a prequel of sorts to the first issue of the Sandman original run (which should absolutely be read before Overture btw, because Overture contains major spoilers from the final Sandman issues) which messes with such concepts of time, reality etc.. Also Dream reveals a bit of a backstory where he was damselled in a tower while a cool lady came to save him from the dangers lurking outside, which is fascinating from a meta perspective of storytelling.
18. Least favourite books of the year
Heart of Darkness by Joseph fucking Conrad. it's both tedious and fucking AWFUL and i hate that i had to read it not once but TWICE this year for two separate classes. if i have my way i'll never touch this book again in my LIFE
Also The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing. I had such high hopes for this one because the premise sounded interesting as hell but the protagonist is just awful. She's the LEAST compelling person to have written an entire epistolary novel about and her character is the flattest thing on the planet. I've gone on SEVERAL ranting sessions (and even ranted in my essay for the class I had to read it for lol) and suffice to say it's just not my thing
19. Best non-fiction book(s) you read this year
OKAY so there are a few that my professors wrote/recommended that were just incredible but those also involve giving away my location which I really don't wan't to do, but I did read A Feminist Theory of Violence by Francoise Verges and was utterly THRILLED with it!
The book talks through various salient issues (ex. racism, the prison system, sexual violence, capitalism & neoliberalism etc.) and why they don't cross each other out but actually intersect in ways that enrich conversations around these topics individually - furthermore also talks about how the sources of these institutional problems is often very much the SAME thing, meaning they're all interconnected enough that approaching one should, in fact, involve approaching these other structural problems also
Fair trigger warnings for discussion of state violence, racism, rape etc. but it's a genuinely poignant book that I highly recommend!

Hi friend!! Just wanted to pop in and thank you for your fic recs, they are genuinely SO helpful and always help me find some gems I otherwise mightâve missed :) your thoughtful reviews are amazing, and as a writer seeing your review of one of my fics just makes me explode with happiness lol. Anyway just wanted to let you know how appreciated they are as both a reader and a writer, and to send you some virtual hugs and well wishes!
KASEY THANK YOU THIS IS SO NICE.  â€ïž
I canât lie, as much as the aim of doing fic recs for me is the chance to let my weasel brain find a socially anxiety-less way of yelling how much I love them, as well as trying to shove people towards the fics I like so that we can encourage more of them, that theyâre written to drive people to those fics I so loved, I always get such an incredible charge out of being able to give something back to an author.
I know it sounds kind of silly to say, but I mean it with all earnestness: It really is an honor to be able to give a boost of happiness to an author, if they like the rec I wrote for their fic, because literally every fic on those lists has to answer one question first:  âDo I want other people to read this fic?â Every fic I ever rec is one I genuinely want other people to read, every fic I ever rec is one I want the author to feel appreciated for writing, to get more eyeballs on their fic because I think it was so worthwhile.
So hearing you say that you find them good as both a reader and a writer is the absolute best of all worlds for me and means a lot to me. I want to thank you for being a sweetheart just as much as I want to thank you for the excellent fic youâve provided us with, as well as any author or reader who has ever gotten anything out of my recs, thank you for being so supportive, sweet, and kind to me and to the tremendously talented authors out there that deserve all the love.
(LOL, IâM ONLY SORRY I COULDNâT GET MORE IN, I HAVE SO MANY MORE I WANT TO TELL YOU GUYS ABOUT HOW GREAT THEY ARE, BUT I WILL SLOWLY GET THERE!)
Ooh for the whump prompts, if you feel like it: Ê: fingers running through sweaty hair and/or feeling so out of it they need constant attention, for obi-wan?
âFingers running through sweaty hairâ (I forgot the sweaty part) +Â âFeeling so out of it they need constant attentionâ from sick whump prompts.
This turned out a little more funny/fluffy than whumpy, and Iâm still not sure how I feel about the ending. But I finally finished it! My first prompt fill. This isnât the brand of whump I normally write and I havenât written anything for Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in...maybe ever? So thank you @kckenobi for helping me stretch my writing wings a little!
Now gotta go, Burrito is losing his $#*!...quite literally!
EDIT: After I finished dealing with literal $#*!, I came back to look at this and saw the first line under the cut got deleted. Itâs fixed now.
Also, adding a cut in a tumblr post should not be this complex.
-------
I did not, Qui-Gon thought in exasperation, sign up for this nonsense.
âWrong way, Obi-Wan,â Qui-Gon redirected for the umpteenth time, with a patience he didnât feel.
âUh-huh.â The woozy padawan said without changing direction.
Qui-Gon grabbed his apprenticeâs shoulders maybe a little too roughly. _âThis _way.â He ushered Obi-Wan to the left.
The healers had warned Qui-Gon that Obi-Wan would be âout of itâ for awhile following the tooth extraction. That was an understatement. The poor boy was tripping over his feet and could barely string together a sentence. The latter problem was only made worse by his mangled gums.
Weâre a spacefaring society, and we still canât make wisdom tooth removal less painful?
âHome?â Obi-Wan mumbled.
âYes, padawan. Weâre almost home.â Qui-Gon shepherded Obi-Wan down the hallway.
Really, Qui-Gon had thought his time lugging dazed and confused Jedi through the Temple ended with Maceâs knighting.
Mace. I hope he doesnât see this.
Mercifully, master and padawan made it back to their quarters without meeting any prying eyes.
âCouch, Obi-Wan. Now.â Qui-Gon shepherded his padawan toward the couch and set him down.
âFunny,â Obi-Wan said.
âWhatâs funny, Padawan?â
âForce.â Obi-Wan looked around the room, seeming not to register anything he saw. âFeels funny.â
âYes, the healers warned the medication might have that effect,â Qui-Gon said, sitting on the couch beside his padawan. It was why the healers typically discouraged sedative medication, but sometimes nothing else would do.
âWhy wisdom teeth?â Obi-Wan was still glancing unseeingly around the room.
âWhat about them?â Oh yes, this was definitely on the level of inebriated newly-knighted Mace.
âWhyâre they called wisdom teeth?â
âI have no idea,â Qui-Gon said, a trifle shortly.
âShouldnât take them out,â Obi-Wan went on. âMaybe they make you wise? Should leave them.â
âYou can tell the healers that when youâre feeling better.â Forget it. Mace wasnât this bad.
Obi-Wan closed his eyes and tipped onto Qui-Gonâs shoulder. âSatine.â
Qui-Gon froze. Was the poor boy more delirious than heâd thought? âWhat about her, Obi-Wan?â
âWould haveâŠâ Obi-Wan let out a yawn. âWould have left the Order.â
Qui-Gon regarded the ginger head on his arm. âTo be with her?â
âUh-huh,â Obi-Wan answered without moving. âLeft the Order for less once.â
Qui-Gon was momentarily stunned by the honesty. They hadnât spoken of Melida/Daan in years. While Qui-Gon had known of Obi-Wan and Satineâs feelings for each other, they had never talked about that, either.
Nothing like pain medication to bring up uncomfortable topics.
âWhy didnât you?â Qui-Gon queried softly. âLeave the Order for Satine?â
âDidnât ask.â
âSatine didnât ask you?â
âUh-uh.â
An amused smile tugged at Qui-Gonâs lips. âYou know, Padawan, in most human societies the man asks for the womanâs hand in marriage.â
âToo scared.â
Qui-Gon chuckled. âI wouldnât have held it against you, Obi-Wan.â
Obi-Wan looked up, blue eyes cracking open. âReally?â
âLove her,â Obi-Wan mumbled, leaning further into Qui-Gonâs arm.
âI know.â The words were out before Qui-Gon could think better of them.
Obi-Wanâs head jerked up again, hazy eyes widening fractionally.
Qui-Gon had to smile. âI am not as dense as you evidently think I am, young one.â
Another sigh and Obi-Wanâs eyes closed. âOops.â
Qui-Gon laughed as he slid his arm around his apprenticeâs shoulders. âSatine is a remarkable young woman, Obi-Wan. I donât begrudge you your feelings for her.â
âForbidden,â Obi-Wan slurred.
âNo,â the elder Jedi said softly. âAttachment is forbidden. Not love.â Qui-Gon ran a hand through his padawanâs spiky hair. âI am very proud of how you handled your feelings for the duchess, Obi-Wan. I donât believe I ever told you that.â
Obi-Wan had no response, and for good reason: The youngster was asleep.
With a fondly longsuffering sigh, Qui-Gon plucked the throw blanket off the back of the couch and draped it over Obi-Wanâs back.
âSleep tight, my padawan,â Qui-Gon murmured. âYouâll feel better in the morning.â
âIâll never unsee thatâ for the dialogue prompts!
âIâll never unsee that,â Ahsoka sniffed, wrinkling her nose in distaste. She poked at the wriggling mass with her fork, letting out a squeak when it moved.  âOr unsmell it, even.â
âItâs not that bad, Snips,â Anakin replied, eagerly digging into his own plate. Ahsoka watched as he shoveled it into his mouth and chewed, grinning at her and Obi-Wan.
âTheyâre bugs, Master!â she exclaimed, gesturing at the insects and worms squirming on her plate.  âNo, itâs worse than thatâtheyâre live bugs!â
Anakin tilted his head, still chewing.  âWell, they taste a lot better than dead bugs,â he said.  âRight, Obi-Wan?â
Master Kenobi went slightly green as he looked up from his datapad.
âDonât remind me,â he muttered, taking a gulp of tea.  âItâs been eleven years of this, Padawan.â
The bugs on Ahsokaâs plate wriggled again, and Ahsoka swallowed, feeling her stomach curl at the sight.  âOn second thought,â she managed, âI think Iâll ask Rex if he has any leftover ration bars.â
Anakin shrugged.  âYour loss,â he said, reaching over for her plate and scraping its contents onto his own. Then he smiled, shoveling more food into his mouth.
Obi-Wanâs nose wrinkled at the sight.
Anakin moaned in pleasure, and Ahsoka turned away, deciding right then and there that she would never complain about ration bars ever again.
