OK SO!! I finally read the WMMAP side stories (or what has come out so far at least) AND I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS!!!
Firstly:
OH THE GHIBLI HOWL'S NOVING CASTLE REFERENCE!!!!! MY HOWL AND SOPHIE AND MY LUCATHY!!! 😭😭😭🥹🥹🥹💕💕💕💕
I actually felt my heart stop here for a solid beat or 2 like I couldn't properly process it for maybe 30 seconds....
These pictures would have sent 15-16 year old me into cardiac arrest and put on life support I kid you not!!! I felt something in me finally be at peace after seeing this!!! I AM FILLED WITH WARMTH AND VINDICATION RIGHT NOW!!!!
Moving on from this TIME FOR THE DE ALGER OBELIA FAMILY TIME!!!!!
Firstly I wanna point out isn't it sooooooo cute how both Claude and Anastasius have the same awkward-shy head scratch habit around each other!! Oh fml man these two are so dear to me!
Black cat dads and their sunshine hyperactive daughters awwwww! ALSO CAN WE TALK ABOUT ATHY AND JENNY'S MATCHING DRESSES!?!?! THAT'S SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!
I love how Anastasius is so scared of the ammount of food Athy is consuming meanwhile Jennette is like "Dad chill she's just like that" and Claude is just having loving wife flashbacks of Diana also inhaling an entire buffet with sweet reminiscence and accepance. They're all so chaotic I LOVE IT!
Anas being ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED of his niece's food consumption and high metabolism might just be the funniest thing to ever grace my phone screen 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I just love how everyone has a different reaction to Claude getting mocked because they KNOW he's is about to make someone meet their maker lmao. The way Athy is basically shitting her pants and Anas is barely holding it together from laughing. Rip Jennette you're the only normal person in this family line. I CAN SEE YOU GIVER YOUR DAD THE STINK EYE!! 🤣🤣
ALSO YOU CAN TELL THAT THE BELOW PANEL WAS SPOON'S FAVORITE TO DRAW!!!
*deep inhale* .....like wow.... Diana cracked that... how I respect that woman.....
And that's it for the side stories so far I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE MORE OF THIS OUTING AND THOSE TWO IDIOT BROTHERS!!!
What a chapter, huh
How I imagine Empress Athanasia's coronation gown.
To be honest, I really love Athy's coronation gown, designed by Spoon. But I'm bored.
I imagine the Obelia Empire with a Russian Empire aesthetic. I don't know, but Athy sometimes wears a kokoshnik, a traditional Russian headdress worn by women and girls to accompany the sarafan. During the revival of Russian national culture in the early 19th century, diadem-like tiaras became part of the official court attire for royalty and ladies-in-waiting. These "kokoshniks" were inspired by both Italian Renaissance fashion and the French haute couture, as well as the authentic Russian kokoshniks still worn by the middle class and wealthy peasants of the time.
Also, in a piece of concept art by Spoon, for a hunting storyline that was ultimately scrapped, Claude wears a boyar hat.
Athy has a strong, almost dragon-like obsession with gold. Historically, gold fabrics have been used in coronations. So I felt that a gold dress in the style of Imperial Russia would have been more appropriate.
JENNETTE IS LIVING THE COTTAGECORE LIFE!
It’s actually canon no way😭💗 this was always my headcanon for jennette and now its confirmed canon🤍

I want to know how Diana ended up so naive. She's a woman from an all-female dance troupe who has travelled around the world not some maiden raised in a tower. Theft, murder, sexual harrassment, kidnappings, rape, abortations, infanticide, she must have seen some shit. There is no way a woman from a low background who has worked as an entertainer for aristocrats and royals could be so blind to the dangerous aura Claude emitted and read his intentions wrong. These kind of women had to make reading the moods of their dangerous master their specality and learn how to correctly identify a threat to their life. They have to listen to rumors and be able to verify them. If the rumors are lies good, but if they are the truth and you didn't believe them you are fucked. You've only got one life. Better safe than sorry. I can only believe Diana hasn't been long in business and was babied by her dancer troop. But even then her naivity far exceeds that of your average commoner. Her guilesness is comparable to Jennette's. She seems to have lived in a world where everything was sunshine and rainbows, which makes it even stranger that she would call Claude's rudeness kind. A person who had been treated kindly all their life would feel a deeper sting when treated impolite than a person who had a harsh life and is used to that kind of behaviour. A person who had an abusive childhood perhaps would have such low standards in a man.
I find this type of attachment made much more sense in Jennette or Athy who had been simultaneously coddled, neglected, spoiled and abused. Athy had actually grown up isolated from the outside world and a reason to become unhealthily obsessed with Claude as her only surviving relative. Her unshaken determination to save Claude can be explained by the blood bond they share and the codependency they had developed over the years. Diana had no reason for this, she wasn't a child and she had found a belonging with her dancer troop who must have been like sisters to her. Diana is a grown woman who had the chance to travel the world and socialize with people from all classes. She must have seen both the goodness and the evilness humans were capable of. Unlike Jennette she was not a rose raised in a glasshouse that could twist from a breeze wind. Diana had the life experience and the support that Athy/Jennette lacked. She had been warned explicitly from Claude by people she trusted and loved, yet she paid no heed in their warnings. Diana closed her eyes to Claude's ugly dark side and did not want to accept its existence, and by that she was denying part of who Claude was.
It is not the people of the palace who had misunderstood Claude, it was Diana. I have always suspected this. I cannot call this love true love because both Claude and Diana were in love with a idealized image they had erected in each others minds.
I firmly believe that Claude never sees/acknowledges Athy as his duaghter until she openly shows her true self and emotions—the first event, being when he publicly humiliates her.
Up until then, Athy had always been a constant reminder of Diana, but not once had Claude ever been reminded of himself. Athy copying/imitating Jennette’s mannerisms inadvertently made her the perfect Diana replacement—someone who will be by his side no matter what harsh words he says, no matter what odd or cruel things he says or does, someone who will love him blindedly and without question—those were all the things he perceived from Athy, and all that Athy would allow to slip out in front of him. She upholds this persona even in front of Felix and Lily to an extent, garnering positive attention and stirring protective emotions by behaving cute and lovely from when she was a child. A lot of her quips and annoyances remain as inner monologue, while Athy is spouting airy and sugar coated words. Claude doesn’t see himself in what she does at all—Athy has always been Diana’s child, but not once could he ever see her as his child.
Until the Public Humiliation event—denouncing to all that she’s a fraud, a fake, and that should she show herself before him he will kill her. That’s Athy’s last straw, among the stress and turmoil of losing years of what she’s worked for and back to square one with a bloodthirsty maniac, she has no energy to keep up the lovely princess facade. So when she’s disrespected, she lets it go—her true face, one of contempt—and that’s when Claude with or without amnesia can finally see it, without the clouded shadow of Diana—that Athy looks like him.
And it’s after the amnesia arc when I notice the frequency of Athy’s inner quips lower. She still quips and complains and is sarcastic in her inner monologue and narration, but she’s no longer up keeping the sweet persona she did previously—or at least, not to its extent. She’s shown a bitter side to her, one that goes against Claude’s rose colored Diana vision. Her attempt to jog his memory post runaway arc by reciting the “flowers bloom in my mouth” line after drinking tea yielded little to no results. Acting like Jennette or Diana isn’t gonna fix him, so she stops/does it less.
I dare say amnesia Claude saw Athy more as his daughter than pre-amnesia Claude. The memories of Diana are mixed up and fuzzy because of the state he was returned to, so he can’t rely on those as comparisons for Athy as much as he did previously. So when he sees Athy, and the most ingrained memory being her face of contempt and frustration—he can only have himself to compare her to, so I find their moments during amnesia arc much more compelling than pre-amnesia, where Athy was still forcing herself to be sweet and loving. Things like helping her study, helping her understand magic—those aren’t things Diana could do. But he has a past in which he couldn’t study or gain education as easily as his brother—and he likely had to teach himself how to use his own magic as well. This trait, this moment of vulnerability Athy has, that’s not traits from Diana—they’re traits from him.
Pre-Amnesia Claude can only see Athy as Diana’s daughter—perfect, lovable, adoring and good at dancing and her studies. But Amnesia-Claude can only see Athy as his daughter—bitter, anguished, magically talented but has difficulty understanding how to make use of it, and first and foremost the runaway arc has set in his mind that he forced her to fend for herself in a world she wasn’t prepared for.
People may have liked pre-amnesia arc Claude, but amnesia arc Claude is where he actually sees her as his daughter. It’s the ugliness that makes them family, not the sugar coated sweet teatimes. Claude knows he’s a horrible and disgusting person, and it’s in Athy’s own imperfections and ugliness where he actually sees himself.
The readers and fandom wanted tea time dates completely missing the way that those tea time dates were the biggest burden between them—it’s where Claude remembers Diana best, and this sees himself and Athy the least. If the fandom truly wanted actual displays of family rather than projecting his dead lover onto her daughter, going on dates for heaven’s sake, they should’ve longed for the bitterness and the ugly—because that’s when their blood relationship actually comes to light without any pretense.
Anastasius Sketch Dump
Finding out that this man will in fact be in the wmmap donghua brought me joy for some reason. So I had to draw him. Last time I ever drew him seriously and as the main focus was back in... 2023 I think.
... And of course, in addition to drawing Anastasius, I had to draw the ship that got me into the oc x canon community online back then.
