Kavi: Would not like driving. She doesn't like driving in big cities because the rules are confusing to her. Does not have her driver's license but can drive (questionably well) if she has to. If she did do the test she would ace the knowledge test and pass the practical but would complain about if the signs are actually functional or not. Definitely makes other people drive but bullshits on the reason.

Mizu: Likes driving and is surprisingly a good driver, even though he doesn't have a lot of experience in driving he is cautious but confident enough that he doesn't come off as a rookie. Does tend to drive a bit faster than the speed limit but isn't prone to road rage. The best designated driver (if you can get him to agree). Likes driving games and simulators, would squeal and jump up and down if he got to try those driving sims F1 drivers use.

Jason: The most mid driver ever. The neutral of driving. Except not in an average way, as in his good is cancled out by the bad. Yes, he slows down in school zones, he always checks both sides and yields to pedestrians, but he also messes with the mechanics of his car and coasts on the downhill. Driving on the highway? No problem, maybe even a good driver, but his parallel parking is about as parallel as a circle. Prefers taking the train specifically.

Keo: The type of driver who loves long road trips and the winding paths of the mountain side and what not. Great at parking, loves her car and washes it weekly. But bad traffic will absolutely ruin her day, grips the wheel with a death grip when someone cuts in front and will honk at ANYONE. Has almost flipped someone off before only to realize it was an old frail woman, apologized but was still secretly pissed and then felt bad about being pissed.

im going to answer them for whoever of the main cast i want + then also for my new cast members bc i am in the process of figuring them out right now and like,, this is fun, y'know.

for all the main cast except caspar, the answer is kinda just 'each other' and 'no'.

sebastian had no idea what love even was until he was unwillingly adopted into jonathan's family and they fell in love. then he grabbed onto it with his grubby fists and never let go. there were a lot of rough edges that needed sanded down and that was uncomfortable, but it was always worth it.

similarly, luca saw love as something distant and out of reach until he met caspar and was pulled into the family caspar had built for himself and surrounded by all the love in the world.

bille bille billie. i think caspar tried to teach billie what love is, but it wasn't a lesson that she was ready or willing to learn. the love that billie learnt from caspar was bruised and jagged and sharp, a horrible twisted thing of her own making. it is maybe in caspar's eventual forgiveness that she really starts to learn what love is, but her real understanding of love won't come until she meets daphne, and that is too many books away for me to be able to wax poetic about.

unlike the rest of these idiots, i think kavi already knows what love is when he shows up in these books. he was loved by his grandparents his whole life, and in many way that love, or his fear of losing it, is exactly what he's running from. it is the fact that he knows love that leads to all of his confusion, because what he's experiencing with caspar and billie is so far from the love that he knows that he is just bewildered by it.

and mattie? she learns love from luci. it is not a good kind of love, but it is the only kind that doesn't feel like suffocation to her.

[ 🕊️ ]ㅤ when did they feel the safest ?

for the main cast, the answer is once again 'with each other'. except it's not just the romantic relationship that makes them feel safe, but the life they have with each other in california. it's their wider family and friends, their house, and eventually their kids as well, that come together to produce this loving, safe place that makes them all feel like they are home. it is nauseating and hard earned.

billie?? i don't think she ever feels safe, or at least not until the very end of the series. until then, maybe 'safest' is when things are really bad, when everything is fucked up and falling apart and her throat hurts from screaming. at least she knows what to do with that.

kavi feels safest behind the lens of his camera. and mattie feels safest in the middle of a crowded party.

caspar craves touch more than he craves food. if he had to choose between the wire mother and the cloth mother, he wouldn't even notice that the wire mother existed because he would already have his face buried in cloth.

luca craves touch but fears it, doesn't quite know what to do with it. it's more lack of experience and social anxiety than fear. he gets used to it, and then he's a cute, clingy little thing. it meshes well with caspar's neverending need to be touched.

i have been consumed by thoughts of Space Cruise WIP lately, soooo I'll do Kavi!

6. What was the thought process behind their appearance? Did you go mostly for the aesthetic or are there other reasons they look the way they do?

I didn't immediately know what I wanted Kavi to look like, but once I committed to making their home planet an extended metaphor for sex tourism in south(east) asia, I was pretty committed to making them brown. When I had a vague shape of them, I went into various picrews to hammer out a design I could get obsessed with and came out with this:

Not pictured (because this 'crew didn't have the option), but they also have a beauty mark under their left eye. Also the unibrow isn't obvious in this either, but they also have one of those. Also also they have a tattoo sleeve which one of their cousins did for them.

7. What is an aspect of their appearance that you like the most?

I am personally in favor of any sort of freckle/beauty mark/birthmark/etc. type of character trait due to purely aesthetic reasons. I like them. So I give them to my characters. Perfect spot to kiss mmmmwah

Also lip ring. Facial jewelry in general. I'm a fan of face things I guess!!

8. What is the origin of their personality? And let's be honest - how much of it is projecting?

Considering how much I know I project onto my other characters, I don't think Kavi has as high a percentage of it? There's definitely still some, but they are way too much of a jock for me to be projecting that hard.

Kavi is extremely protective of their home, family, and culture, to the point of Doing A Big Crime in the name of liberation that necessitated they leave their entire planet (due to the warrant out for their arrest) in order to defend it from being exploited. They don't regret doing it, but are paranoid that it may not have worked, and they just doomed their home to even more bullshit. They want to be able to count themself among the people who didn't lay down and roll over, when the past is behind them and the future is freer, but can't help but wonder if there will be a future to look forward to at all. Or maybe even worse—if all their resistance will amount to nothing, and things will keep chugging along as normal.

As you can probably guess, Kavi is very community-minded, enjoys helping others, but prefers to be part of a cause than leading it. They do tend to naturally fall into a leadership role if no one else is around to hold things together, but it's not their favorite. Probably because they can be very impulsive and they just Do Things without thinking about it. Kavi will get into so many Situations because they heard someone say "act first, think later" once and never let it go. This can either be very funny or very dangerous depending on the stakes.

Some more personality traits very quickly before this gets even longer: very close with their mom, extended family, and a very close-knit friend group that they sadly had to leave behind. They enjoy playing team sports, especially volleyball, and does in fact work out for fun. Their mom is a music historian so they know way too much about 400-plus-year-old songs against their will, but can't deny that shit kinda bangs.

THE ORIGIN OF ALL THIS: honestly i don't know? out of necessity i guess? Kavi needed to be the kind of person who would care about liberation enough to abandon the place they're fighting for, and they also needed a reason to want to fight for it. most of the other detail stuff happened by coincidence or because I thought it would be funny.

7/21/2024: July is Disability Pride Month!

Dulcie is our most visibly disabled doll, which is to say she's the one who uses obvious mobility aids most of the time. She has forearm crutches; she recently received a wheelchair for days when that's better! She also has a service dog, Chrysanta (our original dog character do not steal!

For those not in the know about Locked Tomb canon, Dulcie was born with hereditary leukemia. She's lived far, far longer than anyone anticipated (thanks in part to medical interventions suggested by Palamedes and Camilla) but it's not easy for her. Mobility is often an issue; in canon she uses a pulmonary drain, while many modern AUs see her using a cannula and oxygen tank. She has a lot of bad pain days and her immune system is nearly nonexistent.

Her partners Cam and Pal are both autistic. Camilla has more sensory issues and experiences nonverbal periods; Pal also has ADHD and would readily admit that he jumps between hyperfixations.

Speaking of AuDHD folks!

Here are all of them! (As far as we/they know. There are a couple of folks who are still up in the air here.)

In the back row: Kavi, who has (semi-)canonical ADHD; Nora, who's autistic; one of our new girls, Nancy (yes as in Drew), who's autistic; Judith, who's autistic but hates talking about it and is only in the photo because Nona begged her; May, who's autistic.

In the front row: another new girl, Sookie (yes as in Stackhouse), who's autistic (ADHD was canonically considered for her in childhood as a way to explain what was really her fairy stuff but disregarded; I still think she's autistic); Kit, who has ADHD; Cam and Pal, as said above; Courtney, who's autistic; Harrow, who's autistic (and schizophrenic, and has PTSD, and has depression, and has anxiety, and probably has an eating disorder); Gideon, who's AuDHD.

And in front of everyone: Nona, who's AuDHD and everything else.

Ianthe, who's sporting a new wig, is obviously disabled because she lacks an arm. She's got PTSD from that whole incident; she's probably got some other stuff going on, but damned if she's going to admit it.

Miss Maryellen is also disabled! Canonically, she had polio as a child; she now has one weaker leg and, again, pulmonary issues.
