Dorothy, Ozma and Glinda are lesbians. Glinda also acts as a kind of gay mentor to Dorothy and Ozma.
Ozma's a trans girl.
Prince Marvel's a trans guy.
Jack Pumpkinhead's ace.
Nick Chopper's gay. The Scarecrow's bi. They make fun of each other about it semi-regularly.
Bill(ina)'s gender-nonconforming.
The Lion and the Tiger are a couple.
Jellia Jamb's bisexual (and secretly has a bit of a crush on Ozma). Polychrome's pan in a "sky fairies dgaf about gender" way.
Cap'n Bill's unlabeled but is also a sailor. My guy's seen some shit.
Kaliko's gay; the Nome King's cool about it but also says stuff like "I'm not homophobic, my Grand Steward's queer."
Nimmie Amee's straight but she's so weird about it that I'm including her anyway.
i wish more people read further into the books because only a small fraction of the oz fandom know who the nomes are and i look like a mad man when i talk about them 🥲

The characterization of the Nome King, who is nominally Kaliko, in this book is very frustrating. He doesn't act like Kaliko, ever eager to please and be a good king, but he doesn't act like Ruggedo, with a grudge against Ozites either. His actions and sensibilities align most with Roquat/Ruggedo as he was depicted in Ozma of Oz. A ruler who strikes bargains but tries to stay out of the way of enemies, but isn't above wrongful imprisonment. This is all probably due to the novel originally not being an Oz book at all and being first written as King Rinkitink in 1905, making this character Roquat, who was rewritten into Kaliko to adhere to the Oz timeline when King Rinkitink became Rinkitink in Oz in 1916.

Just for fun, I designed some nomes (aka rock fairies) who are not in any planned pages of Yellow Brick Ramble but do exist in the Yellow Brick Ramble universe.
Mariposita's named not after butterflies, but the metamorphic rock Mariposite. Because it's green like her eyes. Her parents are both male. She's one of those fan shipping OC babies.
Rock fairies reproduce by growing babies in geodes and hatching them like eggs. However, it's considered very rude to compare a nome geode to an egg like I just did.
a WHOLE BUNCH of other Insektors characters of mine! Most of these guys are either background characters, interps, or dead! So, I don’t think I’ll make a color ref for most of them unless I need to.
Miff, Zarojo, and Unity are interps-- Zarojo is based on a scrapped flower gunner from Insektors: the making of, and Miff and Unity are namedropped in episodes the UK dub (Prince of RoKK and DiplomatiK Bridge respectively).
Lord Drako and Kaliko are dead & basically exist for backstory reasons. Crosette and Brukhidius are related to canon characters but are rather distant, and Rook is effectively a background character on the same level as, say, Kopius.
