Dopo aver affrontato la difficile interpretazione di lieder in ‘A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing’ e la poesia di Emily Dickinson nello scorso ‘Graphic as a Star’, la Foster rilegge le canzoni che Federico García Lorca raccolse, arrangiò ed eseguì al pianoforte con la voce di Encarnación López Júlvez, detta La Argentinita, nel 1931. La Foster, accompagnata dalla band del marito Victor Herrero, da vita ad un album che riflette la sua incessante ricerca di forme musicali pure, poco contaminate, e di liriche di spessore. La Coleción de Canciones Populares Españolas, infatti, si diffuse nella Spagna pre-franchista, ma fu subito bandita durante la Guerra Civile. Di tutto il canzoniere, alla sola ‘Anda Jaleo’ spettò l’onore di assurgere a simbolo politico. Sarebbe ingiusto e profondamente sciocco attendersi dall’algida Foster un’interpretazione degna de La Argentinita: calda, intensa e viscerale. La folk singer americana, invece, conferisce ai brani una luce pallida e pre raffaellita, che neppure Victor Herrero riesce a scaldare; anzi, talvolta appare lui stesso spaesato. La Foster scava nelle liriche con il bisturi e le trasporta al centro del proprio ‘sentire’. Più che nella rilettura del classico ‘Anda Jaleo’, quest’album trova il suo centro in ‘Sevillanas del Siglo XVIII’, nella spettrale ‘Nana de Sevilla’ per sola voce, nella delicatezza di ‘Los Reyes de la Baraja’ e nella lieve ‘LaLas Morillas de Jaen’.
