okay sure, all that's fair, but if I might be permitted my obstinate interest, who are the singers whose voice leaps out of the speakers and into the room with you?
I was reminded by the latest Bret Easton Ellis pod how much I always liked Billy Corgan. (He's marvelously arrogant when speaking with the more diffident, jaded Bret.) This might aggrieve some, but he's sort of an American Thom Yorke, less brokenly seraphic in his distress, to be sure, but still compelling at the extremes of his nasal whisper and his screeching cry. And, well, Thom Yorke, of course. Tori Amos from the same period of my youth, the many moods of the eternal feminine, outraged and witty and mourning and coy. Among the old masters, I like Leonard Cohen's ironical rumble; among the living, you know of my fondness for Joanna Newsom, and her voice was originally a joke we learned to take seriously, a revelation that the sublime might (and why not?) squeak.
1970-something and somewhere in America with Buddy Miles – drummer, guitarist, vocalist and member of Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys.
