Honestly, Terius Behind Me just wants us to suffer until we can see the next episode. I MEAN REALLY WHAT KIND OF ENDING WAS THAT
something in the rain.
“something in the rain” also known as “pretty noona who buys me food” was an incredible drama. it follows the relationship of jin-ah an older businesswoman, falling in love with her best friend’s younger brother, joon-hee. there are many obstacles that they must face and many unknowns for their relationship and relationships with those around them. i rate it a 9.5 out of 10.
*now on to spoilers...*
woah this drama had me for all sixteen episodes. i enjoyed the acting and the characters. i thoroughly enjoyed the way in which it was filmed; the cinematography was on point. the scenes when everything seemed to pause and freeze, when it was only the character and you looking on. those were raw moments, that sometimes we all seem to fast forward. but this drama made you stop and think, how the character actually processed everything in that situation. whether it be a serious moment with devastation and tears, or a moment of pure joy and just doing life with each other (like the precious gif i have provided below).
this hit serious issues. they presented jin-ah’s dangerous ex-relationship. i think that more should have been done, because this was an abusive relationship, and he was stalking and attacking her. i cannot even imagine. this was horrible. i did not appreciate this man, and i surely did not appreciate the mother trying to piece this horrendous man back into her daughter’s life. i wish jin-ah was able to talk to her mother about these things, but the aspect of he is perfect-on-paper distracted her mother from reality.
it was easy to get over the age difference because they fit each other so well. they were in love. at first, i was thrown off, like huh. but their personalities brightened when the other walked in the room. particularly, the scene with them walking in the rain, in step with each other. ahhh i loved those moments. when they first held hands, and both hiccuped; my goodness i died. i especially love when he discovered her little voice memo to him, my goodness it had me crying with all my feelings. it was truly sad to watch the episodes in which they weren’t together. especially when they throw the montage scene at you. it just wrecked my heart to see such precious love go to waste in the name of “what has been and conventionally should be”.
their relationship displayed beauty and joy. throughout the episodes, joon-hee says “you’re pretty, noona”. but it was only once she was able to love herself by removing herself from that previous abusive relationship was she actually able to hear it. she was broken, and i love that joon-hee was able to be there for her in a time where she was piecing herself back together again. it shows that true beauty goes beyond the conventional measures on the surface but it is rather found within (yep got super cheesy there but it’s true).
it had me see a whole new perspective. the dynamic between her family was something i have yet to see in a drama. the mother was so set in her ways that she was willing to sacrifice her relationship with her daughter, and her daughter's happiness to obtain a well-known man for her. this points to culture, and how sometimes we place material things over true happiness. it was so sad that much of the nonsense and hurt could have been avoided. the way in which the mother quickly turned on her “so-called” children, joon-hee and kyung-son, was ridiculous. they were precious and she helped them through a horrific time. but god forbid as soon as this wonderful human would want to date her daughter, she would move heaven and earth to put a stop to it.
her previous friendship with her bestie, kyung-son, had me for a whirl. i did not quite know how to process. it was her little brother, so it was weird and unexpected. it was unexpected for jin-ah. i tried to see it from both sides; but in the end, i am still confused and not content with what happened with them. they were friends for ages before all this happened. jin-ah changed for the better than for the worse with how she handled her relationship with joon-hee, and that hurt kyung-son. but i feel like more should have been done to stop the downward spiral of jin-ah. i don’t know still processing.
the moment when joon-hee sees jin-ah with her ‘boyfriend’ at the end, at the wedding. my goodness, it had me crying. joon-hee’s face displayed everything; i felt it, the anger, the sadness, the disappointment. (he is a phenomenal actor). he thought he left the new jin-ah behind, the strong independent woman who made her own choices. but then he finds her back to hiding and not being her true self. my heart broke when i saw how submissive she was acting around her new boyfriend and her family.
my problem with the ending...so nothing was really resolved like nothing changed. not even the way they handled situations. but what the heck the rain brought them together once again, so who needs proper communication skills? am i right? at least all is well in dramaland.
all jokes aside, i really thoroughly enjoyed this drama. i would 10 out of 10 recommend for everyone to watch it. it does have some scandalous scenes though, so beware for the faint of heart.
I genuinely think that it wouldn't have been a cliche if Shin Hyuk and Hari got together in She Was Pretty cause their storyline together was too developed to just throw away 🤔
