looping Spirit of Forgetfulness by Blackbriar rn. In which the singer asks the spirit of forgetfulness (Lethe from greek mythology im pretty sure) to erase their memory of the person they love. That the singer will forget all about the other person. The spirit warns the singer, tells them that [the spirit] is a mischievous trickster who won't care for [the singer's] well being. But the singer is desperate and ignores the warnings, is taken down to the underworld where they complete the deal with the spirit. But it's not the other person they forget, no. It's who they themselves are they forget, utterly and completely. But they still remember everything about the person they wanted to forget.

but frrrr LISTEN!!!! maybe april/casey died. maybe Donnie realises something and comes to the conclusion his feelings for April/Casey cannot stay. But he loves her/him (or both π) too much to just move on. So he searches for another way. Some way to get rid of his emotions. And he does so for months, isolating more and more (maybe? i like the idea of it not being intentional from Donnie's side, he's just VERY hyperfixated on finding a way to get rid off his emotions). And so he finds the Spirit of Forgetfulness Lethe, maybe at first puts it to the side as The Last Desperate Attempt, something he maybe didn't intend to actually follow.
But then he gets that desperate.
So he goes to the Spirit, to Lethe. Searches her out, begs her to make a deal with him. To make him forget April/Casey. Lethe warns him; Beβcarefulβwhatβyou wish for,βdeary. Those waters aren'tβmeant for the living. For all you know, I could be a trickster. Merciless and unforgiving, I might not be your well-wisher. (β the lyrics btw). But Donnie pushes through, goes through with the deal. He is that desperate at this point.
And forgets everything about who he is. His name, his age, where he lives, his family. The fact that he's a mutant. EVERYTHING. But he remembers April/Casey. He remembers her/him (them). (And if they're dead? All Donnie remembers is gone then).
Somehow, the others finds him. Maybe Lethe sends him back to above ground, to where he was before they went to the Underworld. Maybe he's found quickly, maybe he wanders for a while and that's how the others finds out where he is. But Donnie won't recognise them [the fam]. Won't know who they are, what they are. Because, fully truly, all he does remember is April/Casey. That's it. How would the others react to that? The Donnie they know is gone. Would they try to find Lethe and asks her to reverse this? I don't think she would either way; she did warn Donnie the whole entire time what she was, of the dangers of the deal. Donnie knew the terms, and he still went through.
And if April/Casey are alive? How do you think they would react to Donnie having gone to such extremes to forget her/him (them)? What if it had worked so Donnie would have forgotten April/Casey? (As a thought the characters would have). I doubt anything good would come out of that.
Also, would Donnie realise he's forgotten anything? His name and such details, yes. But his brothers? Splinter? Everything about tech and science and all that? Would he even realise it? Would he still be able to do any of that at all because his body remembers things he doesn't? Or would it all be gone too? (β thinking about that episode where Donnie loses his mind rn fjbxhf. Would it be like that, but worse? Because he doesn't remember anyone, doesn't recognise any of his brothers or Splinter or anyone that isn't April/Casey). I'm leaning towards yes, it would be worse than in that episode. No, Donnie wouldn't remember any of the science or tech stuff either. Not with a complete mind wipe. And that's what that river did, what Lethe does. Wipe your mind. But Donnie was alive when he did this, wasn't he? So how would that affect him? Would it ever have been better had he died before making that deal?
honestly, i don't think this would have a happy ending, even with the aftermath of Donnie's deal with Lethe. His memory is gone, and there's no way to get it back. And honestly i just kinda want it to be a sad unresolved ending fnjsnfhf (but, of course, his family would do all they can for Donnie. At least get him to remember who he is. But would they succeed? Can Donnie ever remember who he once was? He made a deal with Lethe. If he remembers anything at all of his old life, would that break the deal? What was those terms Donnie listened to but ignored?)
wait god imagine Donnie started calling himself April/Casey after the mindwipe? if April/Casey is the only thing he remembers, it's not that big of a leap that he'd also call himself by the only name he remembers, right? The angst and messed up potential in that??? hello????
