Sorry it's taking me so long to answer this question, I've been either very busy or very tired so I haven't been tackling my Tumblr inbox,, 😔👍 Lmao

I'm not entirely sure what it is that I'm being asked in regards to S4 EP 16 "Broken Foot"?

If you're asking about my thoughts on the episode in general, I would say that I'm pretty indifferent towards it ! There were aspects of the episode that I enjoyed, like seeing Karai on screen again, as well as getting more content for Shinigami considering she had just been introduced an episode prior ! But there were also a lot of aspects I didn't enjoy about it, like the uncomfortable interactions between Karai and Leo that the writers love to shove down our throats / the way that the situation tries to reinforce this idea to Leo that acting of his own accord without main team (Whether those reasons are justified or not-) will always result in issues / and the continued villainization of Karai's character this late into the story.

I think the point about Leo being discouraged to essentially have his own agency in the story sticks out to me the most, because I feel as though the writers continually wanted to hammer in this idea that he is nothing without his siblings (Which, Karai is his sibling as well but I digress-). It just feels so blatantly unfair that he can't have one thing for himself sometimes? The show already sacrificed a lot of his dorkier sillier character traits by Season 4 in my opinion, tossing them aside in favor of him feeling this role of being constantly responsible for his family + friends surrounding him and somewhat quietly molding him into Splinter's position (Since of course the writers knew what they were going to do in S4 EP 25, "Requiem"-). That's kind of the overall message I took away from, "Broken Foot".

That and the message that Karai isn't allowed to do anything ever without being villainized again. Lmao

I've said it a million times, so I'm trying to monologue about it yet again, but I just think that Karai justifiably is going through a lot at this point in the story and because of those traumatic and psychological reasons I can understand why she makes the moves that she makes sometimes. Not to say that those actions are necessarily "correct", but I can understand them. We didn't even get to see what happened to Karai post her throwing up Stockman's brain worm and the amount of anguish she suffered after that. ALONE. YET AGAIN. Not that it's that comparable necessarily, but it reminds me of Nikki at the end of, "Obsession". She's just left with all this aftermath with no one to help cope with it or explain the situation to her so that she can take those steps to mentally digest it in a healthier way.

It just really pisses me off that they put Karai through so much in the show and she has no support system whatsoever. Especially if there's anyone that has that perspective that she's "pushing others away", which feels like a no-brainer response to me considering everything she's gone through. She's been lied to her whole life, I would imagine she has really bad trust issues as a product of being manipulated at every turn in her life. I wish there was just one character that had enough emotional understanding to meet Karai where she was at instead of trying to force a different outlook onto her despite everything she's endured. 💀

bc in order for adoptive families to work, it can't just be a one-way street of someone choosing to be a parent to a child they didn't genetically contribute to. it ALSO has to be the child choosing to see that person as their parent rather than as someone who just happens to help take care of them. likewise, it's about choosing to see any other children in that home as siblings rather than as just people they live with - and that applies regardless of how old someone is when they join a family.

i will admit that being raised together from a young age will make it feel more like a default than a true deliberate choice to consider the people around you as family - like the turtle boys considering each other brothers when who knows if they came from the same clutch - but as long as the kid gets told the truth eventually, they WILL end up having to face that decision.

some will find it easy to make; some won't. some will decide that yes, this family is their family, and no one can/should tell them different - and some will decide that this isn't their family, it was just a place they were raised in and people they were raised around.

mikey, after learning about his adoptive dad's bio kid, chose to see karai as his sister. donnie and raph never really gave a strong hint either way. leo, on the other hand, very clearly chose to see karai as a love interest rather than a sister, which is a completely valid decision as well.
