The bus doors closed and rumbled off silently, and there went with it the first man Kevin had ever loved. To say he was going to miss Joaquin was an understatement. After Mr. Blossom’s body had been found he sat Kevin down and explained everything to him. How FP has assigned him to get close to him and see if the Sheriff was anywhere close to discovering their dirty little secret. He then explained how he had fallen for Kevin, but how he thought it would be best if he were to leave town. There had been lots of crying that day, mostly from Kevin. But here they were, going their separate paths. Kevin shed a silent tear in remembrance. 

“Preppy!”

Kevin turned around. There, basking in the afternoon sun, was the pretty boy himself. His eyes sparkled with tears threatening to spill out at any moment. Kevin was frozen in his spot, luckily he didn’t have to move. Joaquin dropped his bag and ran to embrace the boy, planting a kiss on his lips.

“I...I couldn’t leave you.”

Both boys’ cheeks were wet with tears when they finally broke apart some time later. They looked into each other’s eyes longingly. Joaquin held Kevin’s face in his hand

“How about we go back to my place,” it’s something he usually said with his signature smirk, but this time he smiled genuinely. 

Kevin hesitated, “I’m sorry, but I don’t, I don’t think I can.”

“What, why?”

“I think you know why.”

His face dropped. Kevin turned away, tears spilling out of his eyes. He wanted Joaquin so badly. He wanted to run his fingers through his hair, gaze into blue ocean eyes, and wanted to kiss his sweet, soft lips. But, he didn’t want to get hurt, not again. So, he continued to walk away. Down the sidewalk, he gripped his bag tightly all the way back to his house. His dad wasn’t home to ask him what was wrong, so he went straight to his room. He spent the next three hours alone crying until he couldn’t anymore.

It was two days later before Joaquin was even mentioned again. When Jughead pulled him aside in the hallway at school.

“Man, you got to make amends with Joaquin he’s useless when he’s mopping.”

“What do you mean?”

“Oh come on, ever since you dumped him he’s been skulking around the White Worm and hasn’t been focused.”

“I’m sorry, I dumped him? If you didn’t know he tried to leave after I found out the only way he even came to me in the first place was to make sure he and your dad’s dirty scheme didn’t get discovered!” he was yelling at this point, causing a few side glances from passersby.

“Ok, ok, lower your voice. I know you still love him, and he still loves you.”

He sighed,” I can’t, I won’t let him hurt me again.”

“Please dude, that man loves you. There’s a reason he got off that bus.”

“Fine, I’ll talk to him. But, I can’t make any promises.’

Kevin balanced on the bar stool in the crowded bar. The chair next to him squeaked and Kevin turned towards it to a pair of familiar blue eyes. Joaquin ordered a glass of whiskey, but besides that didn’t say anything. He was halfway through the drink when Kevin finally spoke up.

“So, are we gonna talk about it?”

“Is that what you want?”

“I’m here am I not?”

“Well, then I want to say I’m sorry. I know I hurt you, and trust me I didn’t want to. When I first got in with you it was purely for business. But man I fell for you, and I fell hard.”

“But, that doesn’t cancel out the fact that you hurt me.”

“I know, I know. But please, give me another chance,” his words got quieter as he spoke.

Kevin lasted all but three seconds before he lunged at him, attacking his lips. Joaquin gave in to Kevin’s advances and let his tongue slide into his mouth. Moments later they both pulled apart for breath. But their foreheads were still touching. 

“I’m sorry Preppy, I didn’t want to hurt you. I love you so much. I know I used you, but I didn’t want to. I know it’s not an excuse. But please, I can’t lose you again. I love you, you’re the one for me. I’ve known it since the day you were brave enough to tell the serpents to shut up.”

Those three little words hit Kevin like a brick. Most guys Kevin woke up with wouldn’t even speak, scared that if they did everything would become too real. It was a reality he was used to. But here he was, a Sheriff’s son town in a Serpent bar surrounded by 20 people who would kill him in a blink of an eye. But he felt safe because he could feel Joaquin, and he knew he couldn’t get hurt if he was with him.

“I love you, and I can’t lose you.”
