Jinopal requested by @authorjoydragon
---
The hallway was crowded as Jinora pushed past her classmates towards the lecture hall at the back.
It was her first class on her first day of her first year of college and so far all Jinora wanted were wider walking paths. As she finally pushed through the doors, she quickly amended that thought to less students.
The theater stretched high above her with at least ten rows and three large sections. It had to seat five hundred minimum. The idea of walking up those steps made her dizzy and for a moment, Jinora wanted to run back home to the isolated island she had grown up on.
Her eyes landed on the front row where only one person sat. A young woman, likely a year or so older, sat in the front with a pair of crutches in the seat next to her.
Jinora looked up the steps again before cautiously moving towards the other woman.
"Hi," Jinora started, "I saw you sitting alone down here and figured you'd maybe like someone to sit with?"
Green eyes peaked up at her in surprise but the other woman nodded. "I'm Opal," she said, offering her hand.
Jinora took it before introducing herself. Opal's hand lingered around hers for a moment before the professor walked in to start the class. Jinora quickly sat next to Opal and hoped she could talk to her more after class.
Those hopes were dashed by crowds that pushed them in separate directions and Jinora resigned herself to not making a new friend today.
Her next class proved her hardest and with a pounding headache she moved towards the commons for lunch.
She startled as a try was placed down at her table and looked up to see Opal standing there. "I saw you sitting alone down here and figured you'd maybe like someone to sit with," Opal said, mimicking Jinora from this morning. "Well, that and there's nowhere to sit."
Jinora stared at her for a moment before nodding.
"Is this your first day?" Opal asked, as she took a seat. She struggled to get her crutches settled and Jinora reached out to help.
"Yeah, that obvious?" Jinora asked.
Opal shrugged. "It's my last year, I've learned to spot the freshman," she replied.
Jinora's brow furrowed. "Not to be rude but how are you only taking first level chemistry in your last year?" she asked.
Opal grabbed her hand causing a flush to climb Jinora's cheeks. "Don't ever listen to the advisors," Opal said seriously. "You always need Chem One."
Jinora nodded and took that into consideration. Her dad hadn't trusted the advisors either.
"Sorry," Opal said, sheepishly tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I didn't mean to scare you but it's the only reason I'm a fifth year senior. All my friends graduated last semester but I was told at the last minute I didn't have all my credits needed."
"That's horrible," Jinora replied. She wondered if maybe her mom had been right to suggest online college.
Opal's smile distracted her from her thoughts.
"It's not all bad," Opal said. "I only have one class and I got to meet you."
Jinora's face flushed again at the playfully look on Opal's face. Jinora watched as Opal's eye lit up at her first bite of the desert she grabbed. Her green eyes practically glowed in the fluorescent lighting of the commons.
All her hesitance at college vanished. It couldn't be all bad if she got to meet Opal.
For your birthday thing would you be willing to do JinOpal for airbending?
This is very interesting ship. Honestly, I had never given it much thought until I started to write this. It’s a little silly so, I'm sorry if it isn't great and I may have done something for my pleasure in there :P Here you go though!
15 days to go!🥺
Jinopal headcanons?
Oh Jinopal my beloveds. I feel like I don't have as many headcanons around them as I do my other ships, due to mainly envisioning them happening in very canon divergent scenarios (for example a universe where they meet later in life, like in a world where we actually got the 'adult concept tlok'), so take this mainly as a scattering of random thoughts about them.
I think the main draw of Jinopal to me as a ship is the fact that I see them as like. Absolute opposites in how they approach their roles and identities as airbenders. Jinora tries to stay nonpartial and detached, as seems to be the more 'traditional' airbender way, while Opal is much more... Beifong about things. Jinora is also clearly very knowledgeable and reverent of Air Nomad history and tradition. While Opal comes from a city that is all about innovation and development.
I just think they'd have a lot of situations like the famed 'Enemies at the Gates' saga of "Opal remember the oath of nonviolence"/ "Fuck the oath, actually".
This screencap actually takes me out everytime idk why
They're so kataang if kataang didn't get along from the beginning to me.
Mind you, I don't think they're enemies or have an outwardly hostile relationship or anything. I think it's more about them being drastically different people with different ideals and often butting heads over that which leads to them having difficulty working together.
I think they'd be the slowest of slow burns. Not just because of the aforementioned mildly adversarial relationship, but also due to the fact that they are like. Nomads. They probably only see each other when staying at the Temples or if they end up travelling together for some reason. So I imagine their relationship would progress slowly, but surely.
I like to imagine them hanging out at first reading their respective books, eventually having a little book club. Since apparently they have similar taste in literature lol. Bookworm gfs ftw.
This is not compliant with canon, but I am deeply compelled by the idea of Jinora being able to spirit project into people's dreams. And Opal having chronic nightmares post B4 due to everything her family went through... and i actually might write a fic abt that.
Back on the subject of Opal being a rather nontraditional airbender, I can't really see her as a very spiritual person. Which would make her dating Miss Spirit Projection very funny. Though I love the idea of Jinora helping Opal get more in tune with her spiritual side and them meditating together. Also Opal guarding Jinora's physical body when Jinora goes into the Spirit World.
I like to think the first person Opal would tell about her relationship with Jinora is Lin, because I love the idea of Lin and Opal being close. I think Lin would be really happy that her niece found someone but also on the verge of putting her head through a wall because that someone is her ex's kid. And obviously the first person Jinora would tell would be Kya, because i just adore Kya and Jinora's relationship.
God imagine the chaos of a Beifong/Airtemple mixed family.
Also the new Gaang movie (specifically Aang in it) has only solidified my staunch belief of "Jinora will get really tall and buff in the future just like her grandpa". People who call Jinora Aang's clone/Aang in a wig put your money where your mouth is.

Love the idea that Jinora pulls an Aang and grows to be incredibly tall in a short amount of time.
Like she leaves for a year or two to help in a remote temple or smth and comes back and she's brushing up against 6 feet or smth.
Korra is inconsolable because her lil sis is now taller than her.
And Opal is having a gay crisis
Also Opal version of this because she's so baby sapphic coded for no reason.

When your airbending bestie's hair starts growing back and she looks hella cute lol.
Jinopal is actually a guilty pleasure of mine I need to draw more of them
[ID: A colored digital drawing of Jinora and Opal from the legend of korra. Jinora is leaning in toward Opal and touching Opal's chin with her hand, and Opal has her hand on Jinora's shoulder. They are both blushing slightly, and have airbender tattoos. Jinora as shoulder-length hair, some of which is put up in a bun, and Opal has ear-length hair. End ID.]
