Iāve went AWOL for a month but hockey twitter is a cesspool this offseason. Jeff Marek was fired to appease the NHLās gambling overlords, Oilers hiring Stan Bowman (of Blackhawks fame circa 2010), and Jeremy Swayman had the audacity to not sign at the free agent deadline and have a girlfriend (#SpeakUpNowSway #ImKiddingThatWasAndRemainsInsaneBehavior). Among other things.

(1) One of Jeff's favorite stories: a player was practicing with Sid and some others on one end of the ice and as they skated around, eventually the ice got chewed up. One of them suggested relocating to the other end of the rink where the ice was still fresh, and Sid said, "No, we're going to stay here, because it's harder. That's where I like to practice." (1:02:30 into the episode) (2) Brian Boyle's story was from the end of the 2021-22 season when he was with the team. The Penguins had secured a playoff position, so in game 82 versus Columbus, Sullivan only played Sid for 15 and a half minutes. The purpose was for him to have a lighter game with the playoffs coming up. Boyle was surprised to see Sid working hard on the bike after the game. After watching Sid for 25 minutes, he asked, "Are you going to get off [the bike]?" and Sid said, "I only played 15 minutes!" Boyle pointed out how many games he had played to that point in the season and that he had played 22 minutes in the prior game. "You got some reps. You got a good workout." And Sid said, "No, I gotta be ready. I gotta be ready to play more." He spent 20 more minutes on the bike. Lots of speculation flying on twitter and reddit about Jeff Marek todayā¦ I actually love him on 32 Thoughts and he seemed like a guy that would be fun to drink a beer with and talk hockey, but he completely disappeared off the face of the earth after round 1 of the draftā¦ there was a mysterious tweet today about Sportsnet let him go for āunconfirmed draft reasonsā whatever the fuck that means.
I guess I just hope he doesnāt turn out to be an awful human being and itās something else, because that would be so disappointing.
