something about love and possession; something about jack who has never had anything that’s his to own and therefore can’t conceive of it; something about katherine who’s been given everything she’s ever asked for except for her agency and therefore doesn’t want to own anything but herself; something about davey who’s only ever owned just enough to leave him wanting

Prompt: how does the date that Katherine and Davey ask Jack on at the end of sure as a star go?
They bicker the whole time, naturally.
It's easy to see how it's actually flirting, now Jack knows what to look for. Davey and Kath are both sharp-witted and competitive, which comes tumbling out in a lighthearted one-upmanship that would put Race to shame. But more than that, the bickering is like a long-form game - they'll pick a fight over anything, just to see if they can.
It could easily be too much. They could tip over the edge from playful to biting all too quickly. That's where Jack comes in, moderating and joking and all together keeping it light. They need the balance or it wouldn't work.
All of this is to say that Davey gets tacos and Kath gets a burrito, and they argue over form until Jack reminds them that they got the same filling. Kath orders her ice cream in a cup and Davey is so offended on behalf of cones that they almost forget to eat their ice cream before Jack points out that it's melting.
They argue over who gets to kiss Jack goodnight first until he drags them both in close enough to peck him on the cheek at the same time.
It's a good system, and Jack knows it'll only get better from here.

I feel like the newsies are already a family but we're rolling with it
Anyway I'll put some of this under a read more since I forgot to do that last time
David grew up in a world where humans have never been the only sentient members of society--he's encountered angels, demons, werewolves, and even the occasional vampire and golem. Growing up in the sticks, though, he's mostly been around humans and some werewolves. There was a golem who went to his synagogue occasionally, but it kept to itself and David was too awkward to say hi.
College is a different story. There's plenty of non-human students, and so David finds himself very quickly meeting a wide variety of beings. On the first day of his freshman writing class, he finds himself staring at the cute guy--no, the cute gir--oh, no (it's both).
The guy pulls a water bottle full of blood out of his backpack, and David's a little intimidated at first, but for their first writing assignment, he's put in a peer review group with both of the people he was ogling, and it turns out Jack (the vampire) is incredibly friendly and not intimidating at all once you actually get to know him. Katherine, on the other hand...
She's not scary, but due to some recessive genes, she's the only demon in a family of angels (who are, incidentally, awful at being angels). She's a demon in the way that Crowley from Good Omens is a demon--she's not particularly evil, but she loves inconveniencing people, especially if it's for a good cause. She also doesn't put up with anyone's BS, which means she and Jack have a slightly antagonistic relationship at first. But once they find a balance, they find themselves spending more and more time together until Katherine announces that she's tried being subtle and it didn't work and she's taking both of them on a date next week.
The date goes well, and as the three of them navigate their new relationship, David ends up being drawn into the supernatural being community on campus--there's Race, another vampire; Charlie, an angel who is willing to be a complete bastard to people in the name of ADA compliance; and Albert, another token human who just has a lot of inhuman friends.
It's a gradual change, but David goes out of town for a debate tournament one weekend, and some guy on the team that he really doesn't like is holding court, and he's sitting in the corner and texts Jack and Katherine that he just wants to go home.
"To your parents?" Jack asks.
Oh, David thinks. "No," he sends back, "To the movie night I know you guys probably put together without me."
"That's next weekend," Katherine says. "It wouldn't have been the same without you."
"That was supposed to be a surprise!" Jack says.
Anyway, Jack and Katherine and the rest of the gang have somehow managed to become David's family without him realizing it, but it's not such a scary thought after the initial surprise. Ultimately, he wouldn't have it any other way.
POSTSCRIPT: There wasn't a good place to put it, but I decided that in this universe, most vampires get the blood they need by buying bottles of it at the grocery store--kosher butchers are in pretty high demand in some areas because of this.
