I had a thought yesterday about the Bachelorette AU and turned that thought into 700 words today! Anyway, here's a ficlet about the aftermath of bachelorette!Crutchie and Albert's first kiss. It's set during chapter 7 (Iceland).
---
Albert didnât panic until he went to brush his teeth.
The night still felt like a blurâheâd gotten back from a date with a woman he was supposed to want to propose to, theoretically; less than ten minutes later, heâd started making out with his roommateâfriendâfriend with benefitsâ
Boyfriend? Albert didnât let himself think.
Either way, heâd spent the better part of an hour kissing Charlie and hesitantly running his hands over his arms and back and trying not to think about how heâd enjoyed his very awkward first kiss with Charlie more than any of the more successful times heâd kissed his last girlfriend.
(Heâd also tried not to think too hard about the feeling of Charlieâs hand halfway up his thigh, his thumb tracing patterns as he tried to haul Albert into his lap. Heâd felt like his blood was rushing everywhere, and it was too scary, too much to consider moving that quickly.)
(Luckily, Charlie had been understanding, though Albert had a feeling that if he asked Charlie to do that again heâd immediately say yes.)
Albert took a deep breath and looked in the mirror. Contrary to what his former religion seemed to think, he didnât look any different now that heâd kissed a man. His lips looked a little puffier, maybe, but that couldâve happened from making out with anyone. He certainly didnât look happierâif anything, he looked a little alarmed. The most significant difference, he concluded, was that every time he let his mind wander, it immediately went back to hands on his waist and tangled in his hair and the feeling of Charlieâs lips against his.
Albert was pulled out of his thoughts by a knock at the bathroom door.
âCan I come in?â Charlie called. âI still need to brush my teeth.â
âSure,â Albert said.
The door opened, and Charlie apparently noticed the unused toothbrush in Albertâs hand, because he said, âYou good?â
âYeah! Yeah,â Albert said quickly. âJustââ
âRight.â Charlie propped one of his crutches against the counter and hesitantly slid his arm around Albertâs waist. âIs this okay?â
âYeah.â
They ended up brushing their teeth like that, Charlie leaning against Albert for support and Albert trying not to get distracted by the feeling of Charlieâs hand hovering at a ticklish spot on his waist. When theyâd finished, Charlie said, âDo you wantâŚumâŚâ
âI thought you could stay over tonight since we have plans tomorrow anyway,â Albertâs last girlfriend before the show, Ellie, had said casually. It almost seemed like an innocent suggestion until she added, âmy roommateâs away for the rest of the weekend,â andâ
âI-I think Iâll just go home,â Albert stammered. âI need toâum, thereâs some stuff IââÂ
He was supposed to be back at Ellieâs apartment the next day anyway, but he stillâhe couldnâtâ
What is wrong with me? he thought, not for the first time.
Ellie looked a little hurt, but mostly confused. âOkay, I guess Iâll see you tomorrow.â
Albert leaned down to kiss her, pushing the vaguely uncomfortable feeling that crept in every time he did so out of his mind. âSee you tomorrow.â
Back in the present, Charlie was looking at him concernedly.
âHey,â he said. âI was just asking if you wanted to sleep in the same bed tonight.â
For a moment, Albert let himself imagine itâwaking up with his head on Charlieâs chest, maybe, or starting his day with a kiss, orâ
The thought wasnât as scary as when Ellie had implied why sheâd wanted him to stay over, but it was still a littleâ
âNot tonight,â Albert managed to say. âSorry.â
Charlie shrugged. âItâs fine. Iâm notâit was just an idea.â
He seemed genuinely unbothered, so Albert leaned in and kissed him. âReady for tomorrow?â
Charlie laughed quietly. âSomething like that.â
Albert passed Charlie his second crutch, and they left the bathroom together.
âLight off?â Charlie murmured when theyâd gotten into bed.
âSure.â Albert smiled at Charlie across the gap between their beds. âThanks.â
For asking first. For taking the last step when I couldnât. For being patient.
He didnât say any of that out loud, but when Charlie grinned at him before he switched off the lamp, he thought maybe he understood.

1) At the end of dyrm, Charlie and Alva met again. What does (re)building that relationship look like for them?
2) A few days ago, the actor who plays Albert in UK Newsies reposted this picture on his Instagram story and added a somewhat hard to read caption and I immediately thought of you (I've never sent an ask with a picture so I hope this works)
Charlie is part of a super fun club with Race and Les called the "coping with the idea that my sexuality is more flexible than I thought it was due to my significant other/major crush from my last life reincarnating as a different gender" club. Club activities include commiserating on how weird it is away from people you don't want to make feel bad by feeling weird about it, exchanging life tips, and bowling. Charlie is unique of the three of them for having been involved with Al last time and not tragic about it, so they have a leg up in communicating and sorting things out.
YEEEEEES!!!! the pure delight in my heart at that cannot be contained.
crutchiealbert is great because albert is perceived as a little shit but is actually soft and crutchie is perceived as soft but is actually a little shit so they have a nice balance
Writing the final scene of this fic took several rewrites and POV shifts, so here is the extended Crutchie POV for the final scene! I recommend reading it after finishing the fic, which is here :)

Itâs not your fault.
Crutchie had a feeling it was his fault, at least indirectlyâAlbert had been trying to be in Crutchieâs space while also running away at the same time for days now. The only time Crutchie had seen people act that way wasâ
Oh.
Suddenly, it all made senseâAlbert sobbing in a corner of newsie square, the jumpiness, the insistence that Crutchie not worry about himâwhich meant all Crutchie had to do was decide ifâ
Albertâs hand was warm in his, and Crutchie could feel their palms getting sweaty, but he didnât want to move at all. He wanted to stay on the roof and see how well he and Albert could aim his new slingshot while sitting down and hope that Jack would be too busy with Katherine and Davey to come up for another few hours. He wanted to make Albert smile like he had after he and Race had stolen Oscar Delanceyâs hat. He wanted to never let go of Albertâs hand.
âI missed ya too,â Albert said. âForgot to say it earlier.â
âYeah?â Crutchie asked cautiously.
ââCourse.â Albert sighed and turned so he was finally, finally looking Crutchie in the eye. âIâyouâre the best friend I ever had.â He looked down at where they were holding hands and blushed. âAnd Iââ
Crutchie reached out to catch Albertâs chin on his free hand, pulled him closer, and kissed him. After a moment of hesitance, Albert slowlyâawkwardlyâkissed him back. He brought his own free hand to Crutchieâs cheek and pushed back just far enough for his fingers to land in Crutchieâs hair.
Crutchie remembered Race dreamily talking about his and Spotâs first kiss, how perfect and romantic and exciting the moment had been. He had no idea if Race had been lying, but either way, this kiss was much clumsierâin fact, Crutchie was pretty sure it was Albertâs first kiss given how disinterested heâd been in relationships in the past.
The angle they were sitting at was a little awkward, so Crutchie tried to turn so he was facing Albert more fully. The movement jostled his leg, and he was forced to pull away as he hissed in pain. He leaned forward to rub at his muscles.
âYa good?â Albert asked.
Crutchie frowned. âNot really. Iââ He tried to stretch his leg out, but that just made it hurt even moreâ âHurts ta keep it straight.â
Albert shuffled away from the wall until he was sitting where he could put Crutchieâs legs over his own.
âDoesnât burn anymore,â Albert said quietly.
âHuh?â
âSâwhy I keptââ Albert gestured vaguelyâ âI had a dream ya kissed me the same morning Davey showed up. After that, Iâevery time we touched, it wasâit was too much.â He rested his arms on top of Crutchieâs shins. âAnd IâI never wanted to kiss anyone before you, so itâit was a big change.â
Crutchie had barely had time to process what Albert had said before Albert shoved a hand in his pocket and pulled out a slingshot.
âAnyway, thought you woulda lost yours,â he muttered. âSoâhere.â
Crutchie laughed as he took the slingshot and tucked it in his chest pocket. âSâthat why you was talkinâ to Scope earlier?â
âYeah.â
âThanks.â Crutchie leaned over to kiss him again. âHow much did that thing cost ya?â
Albert laughed, then groaned. âA whole quarter,â he admitted. âI had to sell a bunchâa extra papes. Worth it, though.â
âIâm still gonna hit ya with it,â Crutchie teased, and Albert blushed furiously.
âI know.â He laughed again. âAnd I might hit ya back.â He absentmindedly ran his thumb over the right leg of Crutchieâs dungarees. âBut not today.â
âTomorrow?â Crutchie suggested jokingly, and Albert shook his head.
âWhen ya legâs a little better,â he said. He wrapped his arm around Crutchieâs waist again. ââSides, thereâs other stuff I wanna do right now.â He grinned with a look that reminded Crutchie of all the shenanigans Albert and Race had gotten up to together.
Crutchie rolled his eyes at the obvious suggestion, but he still leaned down and kissed him again.
