Summary:

He hears footsteps approaching, stopping just shy of the table. David tenses, expecting some stilted attempt at reconciliation from his parents. Instead, he hears a wavering inhale, and the floorboards creaking, and a tentative, “Davey?”

Jack’s voice is quiet; gentle, the way it would be if approaching a stray cat. He sounds to be crouching down beside the table so as to be more level with David. He can’t decide if it being Jack makes things better or worse. On the one hand, he’s mortified that Jack saw him like that; is seeing him like this, on his side in a fetal position under the table. On the other, he thinks Jack might be the only person in the world who can make him feel any better right now.

David gives a weak little hum, not moving or opening his eyes. He can’t, and he doesn’t feel like it, anyhow.

“Why didn’t you wanna go to Pride with us?”

Jack swallows hard. He knew the question was coming. His friends have always gone to Pride, and he’s always gone with them. They always make their “token straight” jokes and Jack has always taken them good-naturedly. They always tease him that he must be queer, hanging out with the group of them, and he always says, “You wish,” with a smirk and a flutter of his eyelashes. He always watches David find some guy who’s more confident and taller and hotter and gayer than him to dance with and make out with and go home — or into the club bathroom — with and he always pretends he’s not jealous and he always pretends like he’s never looking at the guys there, either; like he’s never interested when one of them hits on him. He always looks at the people lining the streets and marching in the parade and dancing at the club and performing up on the stage, the people brave enough to do what he’s never been able to, and pretends like he feels fine instead of sick to his stomach.
