in past productions we’ve had a black jack kelly, a latino jack kelly, a black katherine, an asian david, a racetrack who isn’t always happy go lucky, a crutchie whose actor is a disabled in real life. newsies have been genderswapped because gender doesn’t dictate the character- take uksie’s spot, who is a black woman, for example; spot is the same powerhouse of a character regardless of who’s playing them. these characters are who you make them and you do NOT, and should not, follow the path of making every newsie White Guy #17. this is fiction these are characters you can give them diverse identities! diverse cultures! diverse religions and diverse countries of origin and diverse lived experiences!
also stop making them stupid. for the love of GOD stop making them stupid. maybe most of them don’t have a “formal” education but they’re street smart and quick on their feet and resilient and they should not be reduced down to an accent for shits and giggles. not every newsie has to be a white cisgender man. get real with it. you agree. reblog.

I saw this mentioned in a post a while ago, but I wanted to expand on it with my own thoughts and headcanons:
What if Wiesel and the DeLanceys are inclusive and apply gender roles and stereotypes to everyone? Like, say Oscar and Morris somehow end up in a fight with Hotshot (since I've seen a few headcanons of them being a trans woman) and they find out she's trans I'd imagine it'd go something like-
"Wait, wait, wait- youse a trans lady?"
"...yeah. So-So what?"
"So- We ain't allowed tah hit goirls!"
"Yeah, an' cover up those ankles, yah hooker!"
And they just- leave. Because they don't beat up weak, fragile women. Also, vice versa- they get in a fight with Racetrack over something (there are some headcanons about him being a trans man) and they make fun of him for dressing in men's clothes.
"Yeah, quit dressin' like you'll be a workin' man!"
"What if I wanna be a workin' man?"
"...then we don't beat up goirls." *cracks his knuckles.* "but guys are fair game."
And that's the first time they beat up Race, but definitely not the last. Every time they insult him, they instinctively call him a bitch, and then they correct themselves and call him 'a major fuckin' dick' because that's what they call Jack and Davey and Crutchie.
I've seen headcanons that Davey's a trans man too, but in my mind, the DeLanceys already thought of him as a man, and this changes nothing to them.
"Wait, so Davey's trans?"
"Yeah, he is. What're you gonna do about, DeLancey?"
"...well, now we know not tah hit 'is dick."
"Wait wait wait, but gettin' hit in the crotch still hoirts if youse a lady, right?"
"I dunno. Neva hit one a' those before. And if youse got lady parts, not if youse a lady."
"Yeah, youse can still make cars even if youse gots ink press, it's jus' a little different."
"Amen, brother! Now, where were we, David?"
Jack is gay? "Wow, no boyfriend yet, eh Kelly?" Jack is Bisexual? "Battin' fah both teams and still losin' tah both!" Jack and Davey are dating? "Finally pulled, ey Kelly? Gotta say, I'm glad it was you and not me, because- whoof. He ain't a looker." Jack is dating Crutchie? Same reaction.
Their bullying and misogyny is entirely inclusive of all genders, races, and sexualities, thank you very much! It's specifically tailored to each person and what makes them uniquely bulliable.
