Uh yo so I highkey hc Neil as trans (and I will stand by that until I die), so have this!

Neil should have known better than to play Class 1 level Exy in his binder, but it appeared that his dysphoria got the better of him. The way it was practically eating him alive. Normally he wasnât this much of an idiot, but he must have thought that maybe if he could just build up the stamina for it, everything would be fine. It was only his first week with the full team, his first few practices had been pretty mild, but now they were rapidly picking up. The Foxes were in the middle of their morning practice, when suddenly Neil felt a shooting, burning, pain throughout his chest.
âFuck,â He cursed sharply under his breath, taking it upon himself to stop playing and hunch over. His hands resting on his knees as Neil fought desperately to get air back into his lungs. With every breath, a new burning pain would emerge. It was damn near overwhelming. Neil sunk to his knees as he started coughing, by now he had attracted the attention of multiple other players. Dan was first to respond, she dropped her racket as she ran towards Neil. Her shoes squeaking loudly against the court floor, the sound echoed now that it was the only one in the court.
âHey⌠Neil breathe,â Dan shushed, carefully rubbing Neilâs back. Finally, he gasped, taking in a deep painful breath. Neil could feel all of their stares on him, and he hated it. He thought he could handle this, he had in high school. But this was different, a whole other ball game. This was college level Exy, far more intense than high school.
âCome on,â She gestured gently for Neil to sit back. He obeyed and sat on his knees, one hand scratching at the floor as if to find some type of leverage. Neil closed his eyes and tilted his head back as Dan struggled with his helmet straps.
All eyes were on Neil, he could even feel Wymackâs intense stare from the otherside of the plexiglass court wall. He didnât like it, he hated this kind of attention. His old team learned shortly to just let Neil deal with these issues on his own, and Neil liked it this way. But the Foxes were very different from his old team, and he didnât see them changing anytime soon. Neil supposed heâd have to adapt to this.
Dan slowly lifted Neilâs helmet off and placed it down next to him. Trying to hide her look of concern with a light smile. Neil couldnât return a smile, he was too focused on trying not to pass out from the burning, growing, pain and asphyxiation. Somewhere, far off, he heard his other teammates making quiet comments. Though he couldnât make out the words quite right, he could still hear their tones. Matt sounded concerned, kneeling down next to Dan and whispering softly to her. Kevin: annoyed. Grumbling about how Neil should know how to pace himself on the court. Andrew: bored. He stood with his racket perpendicular to the ground, his chin resting on the butt of it. Aaron seemed intrigued almost curious, but not a single drop of concern could be found in his eyes. . Allison and Seth were talking so quietly, he couldnât even hear the tone they were using. Nicky was standing farthest away from Neil, his facial expression looking like he was trying to piece something together. That look made Neilâs gut twist with anxiety. He couldnât afford anyone finding out about this, theyâd kick him off the team for sure. Exy was all he had, he couldnât bare to lose it. Renee stayed silent, but she hovered just behind Dan, worriedly looking down at Neil.
âDo you need water?â Matt asked, breaking the few seconds of extremely uncomfortable silence. Neil nodded, managing to get out a raspy, âYes⌠Please,â
Matt nodded and got up, leaving the court in search for Neilâs water bottle. Neil then made moves to get up, Dan instantly started trying to help him. Neil just waved her off, wanting to get up on his own. Heâd shown enough weakness enough already.
âHow about you go to the locker room? Take a break for a bit, ok?â Dan suggested, Neil instantly opened his mouth to protest. He had to get back into the practice, he could get through this if he just got used to it. He was sure of that.
âNo,â Dan shut it down before it even started, âIâm your team captain, so youâll listen to me and go, alright?â Neil had no other choice than to obey. He picked his racket up and slowly made his way off court. Once he was off, Dan turned back to her team and started practice up again.
The court doors banged shut behind Neil. He trudged into the locker room, trying his best to ignore the intense stare he felt from Wymack. But Wymack hadnât said a word to him yet. Neil hoped he would keep it that way.
Neil sat down on one of the wooden benches, his elbows on his knees as he put his head in his hands. He was still working on getting his breathing under control when he heard the locker room door swing open with force. Neil jumped and looked up to see Kevin approaching.
âWhat the hell was that?â It sounded more like a demand than a question. Neil rolled his eyes and stood up.
âIâm fine, thanks for asking,â He replied, his voice dripping with annoyance.
âI donât give a shit,â Kevin spat, the anger was practically radiating off of him.
âWhat the hell happened to the Neil Josten I recruited? The one who gave me his game? And now you canât even get past the first twenty minutes of practice?â
âIâm working on it,â He said simply, his tone harsh yet cold.
âWell work harder,â Kevin berated, balling the front of Neilâs jersey in his fist. Even though there was about three layers between Kevinâs fist and his chest, one of which being his thick chest padding, Neil could still feel a sudden fear pulse through him. Neil grabbed Kevinâs wrist and forced his way out of his grip. Making sure to keep his expression schooled, to not let a single hint of fear creep on it.
âFuck off,â Neil glared, taking a few cautionary steps back.
âWe canât afford having you passing out every goddamn game, so you better get your shit together or else-â
âOr else what?â A new voice cut in, âTake a hike, Kevin,â Neil looked past Kevinâs shoulder and saw Nicky standing at the door, his arms folded as he leaned up against the wall.
âYouâre in no place to tell me what to do,â Kevin huffed, turning towards Nicky.
âAndrewâs orders,â He said simply, his voice staying level. Kevin grumbled something angrily under his breath and walked off, heavily glaring at Nicky as he passed by. Neil sighed and sat back down, staring at his hands. He could hear Nicky walking over to him, then felt Nicky sit down on the bench, a solid two feet between them.
âIs there something you want to share, Neil?â Nicky asked softly. Neil squeezed his eyes shut, swallowing the lump in his throat.
âNo, Iâm fine,â He said, fooling no one.
âI wonât tell them, you know,â Nicky reassured. He thought back to the week before when Nicky had said the same thing. Heâd walked in on Neil mid testosterone shot. At first, Nicky thought that he was doing heroin or something, but Neil was quick to sweep that idea away. He half lied and said that he took it because he had a natural testosterone deficiency, and that he needed it. Which was true, Neil just didnât say how much testosterone he was really lacking. Nicky did seem skeptical at first, but Neil had no trouble convincing him. Maybe he just hadnât done as well as he thought he did in that department.
âHow can I trust you?â Neil questioned, opening his eyes again, though he didnât dare look up at Nicky. Truly, he didnât know how to trust anyone, let alone Nicky. And to be quite honest, Neil didnât want to trust Nicky, but it seemed that heâd have to now. Nicky already knew, he was just waiting for Neil to say the words.
âI havenât told a soul about your heroin addiction,â Nicky joked lightly. He laughed softly at his own joke. Neil felt a ten pound weight fall off his shoulders from that. He sighed, finding a way to work up the courage to say it, it was only a simple two words, and yet they seemed to get caught in his throat. Neil took a few deep breaths, wringing his hands.
âIâm trans,â His voice was quite, borderline inaudible. Though Nicky picked it up clear as day.
âThank you, for trusting me,â He said genuinely. Neil just nodded in response, finally standing up and looking at Nicky.
âJust promise me you wonât be an idiot again?â Nicky asked as he stood. Neil sighed and started weighing the pros and cons of not binding while on the court.
âItâs really too many layers to even notice, and the chest armour alone can probably hide it,â Nicky cut in before Neil could think of refusing.
âFine, I wonât be an idiot anymore,â Neil agreed, he could see Nicky physically relax.
âStarting tomorrow,â Neil added. Nicky nodded and thought of that as reasonable.
âAlright,â Nicky started to the door, then turned when he noticed Neil wasnât following just yet, âCome on, weâve got a practice to finish,â
Neil nodded and starting jogging out of the locker room. He gave Wymack a small nod as he passed by him, to show that he was fine. Wymackâs look said that theyâd be talking about this later, but Neil didnât want to worry about that right now. As he walked onto the court and towards his starting position, Nicky stopped him with his racket.
âHey, take it easy kid, got it?â He waited for Neil to show a sign of understanding.

Don't let me see what I am
cause I can't stand it, no I cant
I'm coming back âround again
It's been over a year, I thought this was the end
Neil stood in front of the mirror, just looking. His eyes glowering angrily at his body. He wasnât wearing a shirt, just his binder. That constant reminder that heâd never get what he really wanted, to be born a boy. Heâd have to work for the life he wanted more than anyone else, and he hated that. Why did everyone else get to have it so easily? Why did he have to be cursed with this life? Neil thought itâd get better once he got on testosterone, and it did, but it still hurt. He still ached inside, still longed for what heâd never get. Heâd been on T for a year now, and the changed were drastic, he didnât look a bit like how he used to. But it still wasnât enough. Itâd never be enough.
And now I don't remember comfort
because what I am is what I'm not
I don't belong here, it's just hopeless
Find me a way out if you love me at all
He wiped at his eyes quickly, looking away from the mirror. Neil reached out and grabbed his oversized hoodie and threw it on. He trudged out into the hall and down to the living room, flopping down onto the couch. Neil curled into a ball, playing with the strings of his hoodie, lost in thought. His mind traveling back to his earliest memories, to when he was her. He wanted to claw those memories right out of his head, he wanted them gone. He just wanted to remember Neil Josten, not who he was before. Not her.
Don't let me hear what they say
cause I can't stand it every day
I'm thinking that I should leave now
And I don't think I'm coming back this time
Neil had thought back to how heâd come out to the team. It became a necessary thing to do. He hated that. He never wanted them to know. But now they do. Neil sighed and put his head on his knees. Wondering what his team thought of them now. They seemed supportive, but everyone has their own thoughts tucked away in their heads. He was scared of what those were. He could run, he could leave, never turn back. Itâs what Neil did best, he could go so far away. Somewhere where no one would ever know. He wouldnât keep anyone close this time around. Heâd learned that lesson. Neil would keep to himself, do what the bare minimum required to survive.
Cause now I don't remember comfort
because what I am is what I'm not
This phantom skin it's weird to live in
He hadnât realized that he was crying until he felt the tears roll off of his cheeks. He wasnât the type to cry, the last time he did was when he had to bury his mom. Neil felt a pain in his chest like his heart was clenching. The dorm door swung open, but Neil didnât notice that until he felt someone wrap an arm around his shoulder. His head shot up in panic as he looked over and saw Matt. His eyes flooded with concern. Neil let his emotion rule over his survival instinct as he leaned into Mattâs hold. Matt wrapped both arms around Neil as he hummed softly, trying to get him to calm down. A tactic that he always used with Dan whenever she got upset.
âItâll be okay,â Matt whispered, âYouâll be okay,â
So find me a way out if you love me at all

There would never be a sweeter taste than victory. Neil loved it, he loved the feeling of every victory, every win on the court. The way that suddenly everything would erupt. Neil could hear Danâs cheerful screams from the opposite side the court, sheâd run over to Matt and pull him into a tight hug. Nicky would pump his free fist in the air, while tightly holding onto his Exy racket with the other. Andrew would look bored and tired, but after a while, Neil began to realize that there was a faint look behind his eyes. Something resembling joy would glint in them for mere seconds. Allison and Renee were attracted to each other like magnets. Theyâd walk up to Dan with arms around each other. Kevin would try to keep his neutral judging look on, but sometimes he couldnât help it. Sometimes heâd smile. Sometimes Kevin would give into the win, and celebrate. Aaron would instantly look over to Katelyn, smiling proudly at her through the plexiglass walls. Neil would observe all of this, for about half a minute, before joining the others in celebration. His chest would swell with joy and pride. Dan would wrap a tight arm around his shoulders and pull Neil into a hug. Sheâd always whisper, âIâm proud of you,â to him.
Neil never had anyone say âIâm proud of youâ to him before he met the Foxes. Before he joined their team, or rather, their family. Now he heard at least once a week. And not just from Dan, it was also from Wymack, Matt, Nicky, Allison, and Renee. The others never quite said it, though they showed it in other ways. Aaron would clap a hand on his shoulder briefly after a particularly good game. The angry look in Kevinâs eyes would dissolve momentarily, and something else would replace it, pride perhaps. Andrew would nod ever so slightly at him, a small smile daring to pull at his lips.
Neil loved winning almost more than he loved Exy. But the feeling of victory could never surpass the feeling of unity. The Foxes were like clockwork on the court. It had taken them a while to get there, but each movement flowed so smoothly into the next now. Itâs like they had all adopted a sixth sense, the whole team knew what was going to happen next before anyone else. They were practically unstoppable.
Some nights, Neil would return to the dorm exhausted, drained, sore, bruised, almost physically broken. Those nights, heâd lie in his bed, staring up for hours, an idiotic grin on his face as he replayed the game over and over again in his mind. Heâd review the moves and plays he made, how the other team reacted, how his own team reacted. Thinking of every possible way he could improve. Those nights were his favorite. Neil was constantly evolving, trying to change. Trying to be better. He wanted nothing more in his life than to be better, to make most of the life he had been so lucky to re-obtain.Â
Neil never knew that heâd live past the age of 20, and now he was given so much more time. He wanted to spend as much of it as he could, making a legacy, proving a point. Proving that he was more than just the Moriyamaâs âpropertyâ, proving that he could do more than anyone ever thought he could. He wanted to prove that Neil Josten was a living horror story. Neil wanted to show them all that he survived. He survived. He didnât care what life threw at him anymore, he could take it, he could survive it.
The Foxes had just won a game against USC. It was brutal, but one of the most pacifistic games theyâd ever played. It was always like that with the Trojans, they put up a strong fight, and the Foxes always gave it their all. No matter what the outcome, theyâd be happy either way. Both teams decided beforehand that they would meet up for dinner afterward. It was a home game, so the Foxes were in no rush to get back to Fox Tower, and the Trojans were always up for a good celebration. After their brief celebration on the court, they shared a genuine handshake with the Trojans, then trudged off to the locker rooms to freshen up.
Neil usually liked to get in and out of the locker room as fast as he could, even though by now he was comfortable with the guys and trusted them, he still didnât want to keep everyone waiting. But today was an exception to that, today Neil stood under the warm water stream for 20 minutes, letting his muscles relax as he let his thoughts take him where they needed to go. Neil wondered what itâd be like to win a game once he got to Court. He wondered how much adrenaline would pump through his veins as the final buzzer went off. How heâd take his helmet off with numb, shaky fingers. Wipe the sweat from his eyes as he stared at the scoreboard in disbelief. The cheer of the crowd would be deafening. He would feel the stadium shaking. Heâd be breathless, sweaty, and gross. Neil already knew that that feeling would be addictive, he knew that heâd be hooked the second he felt it. And Neil couldnât wait for that.Â
Neil was startled out of his daydream by the stall door being banged. Andrewâs voice echoed through the room as he said, âHurry the fuck up, we donât have all night,â. Neil laughed to himself at that. He was in too much of a good mood to let anything get to him.
He quickly got ready after that, half-assedly drying his hair with a towel. Knowing that itâd air dry by the time the dinner started. Neil barely got two steps out of the locker room before Nicky showed up and started to adjust the button up he was wearing.
âHow the hell is your collar so crooked?â Nicky muttered, his tongue poking out of his mouth ever so slightly as he adjusted it. Neil was used to this by now, Nicky did it every time they went out to Columbia. He just stood still and let Nicky do his thing, fixing his collar, pushing back his hair, making Neil look âsocially presentableâ. After all, everyone was so sure that heâd end up in Court one day, Neil needed to not only be likable but also look it.
They all filed out of the stadium and into their respective cars. Ever since things started getting more serious between Andrew and Neil, he was promoted to sitting in the front seat. Kevin protested at first, but then stopped and let it go. Which was probably best, seeing as Neil could sense that Andrew was on the verge of punching him. Neil carefully got into the car and buckled his seatbelt. Even though it seemed a bit unnecessary since they were only minutes away from the restaurant. He gazed out the window as Andrew pulled away. Watching as the stadium got smaller in the side mirror until it was out of his sight. Nicky chatted mindlessly about something that had caught his interest earlier. Kevin and Andrew chimed into the conversation when it was necessary, but Nicky was the main reason the conversation stayed alive. Nicky didnât like it when there was too much silence, even if it was comfortable silence. He couldnât allow that.
The usual calm noise of Nickyâs talking was interrupted by a frightening, âHoly shit!â Neil had only mere moments to asses and react, looking into the rearview mirror to see Nickyâs eyes wide with fear. Neilâs eyes flicked down to the windshield and time seemed to slow down for a second. The car in front of them had just been t-boned at the intersection, and Andrew was moving way too fast to be able to slow the car down in time to save them. Neil felt Andrew start to swerve the car out of the way, but he was too late to react. Neil felt Andrewâs arm press against his chest to keep him from flying forward as they collided with the car. Andrew had no idea if that would help in the slightest, but in that one moment, Andrew was afraid. Afraid heâd lose Neil, so easily, just like that. Gone.
Decided that since I haven't heard from my third contest winner, I'd pick up one more.
Just in case I never hear from them, it wouldn't be fair. Or so I think. If I do hear from them, I will still do their request, of course. But for now, the Random Name picker has spoken and chosen: synnister / tovakiin hooray~! \o/
