O extrato acima faz parte do filme educacional Life along the Amazon River. Segundo o canal que o divulgou: âdocumenta a vida cotidiana daqueles que vivem ao longo do rio. Foi produzido pela Academy Films em 1962 como um filme instrutivoâ.
Ao mostrar a movimentação do Porto de BelĂ©m, o locutor diz: âAqui transportadores navais carregados com produtos da bacia amazĂŽnica: castanha do parĂĄ, madeiras de lei, borracha, peles de cobra e peles de jacarĂ©â.
As casas exportadoras - ainda no inĂcio do sĂ©culo XX - lucravam com essa atividade, pois o produto aparece entre os seus itens de comĂ©rcio, como no anĂșncio da J. Marques & Cia. (couros) e da De Lagotellerie & Cia. (cuirs).
à curioso que ainda na década de 1960 esse fosse um dos produtos de exportação da AmazÎnia. Dados do Porto de Belém mostram que em 1943, 46 toneladas de couro de jacaré foram exportadas por essa praça.
Havia na cidade uma loja denominada Casa Crocodilo, situada na rua JoĂŁo Alfredo, especializada nesse produto. Possivelmente devia ser alimentada por algum dos curtumes da cidade como o registrado pelo IBGE:
