Hell on earth in Hong Kong with the devastating fire. Not only did we witness blazing flames consuming multiple high-rise residential buildings and have to prepare ourselves for losing loved ones. Not only did we have to perform gratitude to people caring about us. We also have to be bombarded with BBC, CNN, The Guardian, The Independent, Reuters, Channel 4, ITV and Sky News scapegoating bamboo scaffolding, a cherished construction and architectural art form for the fire. It’s not hard to listen to local voices to see that it was caused by the green mesh engulfing the building. It’s not hard to see the bamboos remaining intact while the mesh burned. It’s not hard to think twice before parroting people who have every reason to protect themselves from accountability for causing the fire. It’s not hard to draw parallels with the London Grenfell Tower tragedy. It’s not hard to see the Orientalist and colonialist infrastructure parroting these lies prop up.
