In Carl Linnaeus’s first printing of Systema Naturae, which standardized the use of binomial nomenclature and animal taxonomy, pelicans, along with antelope, barnacle geese, and shrinking frogs, were classified under Animalia Paradoxa, or cryptids! Linnaeus used this section to give reasonable explanations for why these things couldn’t possibly exist and he basically wrote “sailors are such terrible hecking liars how does anyone believe even their drivel”.
He uh. Dropped the cryptid section by the sixth edition.
