Ain usually didn’t intervene at night.  It was easier to recharge his energy when his pendulum wasn’t shattered, after all, and sleep didn’t really do anything for him.  Even so, he stayed in Elsword’s room, perched on the end of the boy’s bed, watching him sleep even as he recharged his own energy.

So when Elsword started thrashing, and his breath began coming in panicked gasps, Ain saw it immediately.

He reached out to try and calm the boy, but his ethereal hand passed straight through Elsword’s shoulder.  Elsword shivered and moved away.  Ain frowned and willed himself back into Intervention.

“Elsword?” he whispered, and Elsword came awake with a start and a yelp, scrambling to find his sword.  Conwell’s sheath appeared in midair, and Elsword pulled a blade from it, holding it up to the darkness with a panicked gaze.

“Elsword,” Ain repeated, trying his best to be soothing.  “It’s just me.  You had a nightmare.”

Elsword’s breathing calmed slowly, and the Conwell in his hands dissolved as his eyes finally focused on Ain.  A blush crept across his cheeks.

“Ah… yeah,” he murmured.  Ain sat down on the edge of the bed.

“What was it about?”

Elsword said nothing.  Ain frowned, then leaned forward and kissed his forehead.

“Well, whatever it is, it won’t hurt you. I’ll protect you.”

Elsword’s clutched at Ain’s wrist, and Ain let him even though Elsword’s palm was practically burning on Ain’s corrupted skin.  He met Elsword’s wide eyes with his own.

“But… what if you can’t?” Elsword whispered.  Ain tilted his head.

“Impossible.  I’ll always protect you.”  And when I can’t, you won’t know it.

Finally, Elsword seemed to relax a bit.  Ain gently tugged himself from Elsword’s grip and twisted to nudge him back under the covers.

“Sleep, okay?” he murmured.  Elsword didn’t close his eyes as Ain fluffed his pillows and tucked the blankets around him.

“Will you stay?” Elsword asked.  Ain hesitated, then saw the nervous fear in Elsword’s gaze and nodded, kicking off his shoes and laying down on top of the covers.  Elsword snuggled up to him.
