so. I guess the thing is that seb is the bystander in all of this. it's aaron's story, it's aaron's life, sebastian is the most normal part about it. he loves sports. he always wants to watch movies with his best friend, he wants to be a pro exy player but he'll major in engineering, his little sister gets on his nerves but he loves her to bits, he loves breakdancing because his older brother is really good at it, he spends evenings sitting in the kitchen while his dad cooks, rambling on about anything he can think of, he's passable in school, he's full of energy when he gets to play exy, and he walks home every day with his best friend beside him.
sebastian knows something is wrong. he can hear it in the strain of aaron's voice every afternoon, he can hear it in the silence as aaron talks less and less on their walks home, he can see it when aaron tenses just before he leans against a wall, he can see it when aaron hurriedly stubs out a cigarette as if trying to hide it from sebastian. seb never says anything because aaron doesn't want to talk about it, and he's trying to preserve the casual ease of their usual interactions. aaron relaxes when it's just the two of them, he smiles, and sebastian wants to keep that aaron, not the one that's scared and hurt.
is it selfish? yes, in a way. but he's thirteen. he met aaron when they were six. they've been best friends essentially since then, and every time sebastian tries to ask aaron if he's okay, aaron gets defensive and pulls away even more. so no, sebastian doesn't know what to do. and yes, he's scared himself. he's scared every time the wind blows aaron's hair away from his face to reveal a bruise on his forehead that he covers up again. seeing dried specks of blood on aaron's shirtsleeves makes his chest ache and hearing aaron's voice shake when he talks about his brother makes sebastian wish there was a button he could press that would just fix everything.
they're thirteen. aaron shouldn't need saving and sebastian shouldn't be the only person who tries.
