I’m really pleased that you’re asking this question, because it means you’re thinking about getting help and that’s a wonderful, brave step for you to take. In short, yes, you can get therapy for free through the NHS, but it can take a little while to get it sorted out, and the process can vary a bit between NHS trusts.

The NHS has a scheme called Improving Access to Psychological Therapies which provides therapy for people suffering from mild to moderate anxiety and depression. In some areas, you can refer yourself (try googling ‘talking therapies’ + the name of your county, here’s the page for Oxfordshire as an example) but in others you’ll need to ask your GP to refer you. I know this can feel slightly scary, but I promise they deal with things like this all the time and it won’t bother them one bit.

If your problems are more complex, or your GP thinks you might benefit from a bit of extra support, you might be referred to your local Community Mental Health Team. Usually, this means you’ll have an assessment with a care co-ordinator, who will work out what the best way to support you is, which might include therapy. Often when you’re offered therapy through the NHS, it’s for a set number of sessions, usually 8-12.
