On the surface, avoidance, minimization, distancing, splitting, and attempting to place a positive value on painful experiences may look like dreadful self-deception. In reality, however, this self-regulation of negative affect performs a life-saving function. For precisely that reason, trauma patients find it dangerous, even impossible, to give up these survival strategies and self-healing measures, even though they block creativity and growth and lead eventually to stagnation and decay. [ . . . ] The sacrifice of one's self-protection strategies and the loosening of one's rigid defense mechanisms are dreadfully painful and threatening processes, for they uncover old wounds associated with safety, trust, power, esteem, and intimacy.

Found this part fascinating, that schizoids lack normal repression. A lot of circumstances where I couldn't understand why some people weren't saying the obvious (and would punish you if you did) make a lot more sense after I read this years back:
-From Treatment of Schizoid Personality - An Analytic Psychotherapy Handbook
Being able to enjoy deep conversations (with honest, tolerant, non judgmental people) seems like a paradox... If I wouldn't have experienced it myself, I'd think an adaptation around withdrawing from everything social would go into further withdrawal from deeper conversation, but I think it really points to what exactly it is that triggers schizoid defenses worst. Being the shallow, unsafe, unclear, unpredictable and quietly coercive interactions that can seem to dominate life. If the other party is very clear about where they stand, in good faith, instead of reactive, making it about you in a good or bad way (or honestly about you in any way), just curious about what is meant without jumping to conclusions, no pressure, expectation or trying to control where you stand, then it takes a lot of stress out of the conversation and is pretty rare in the world. I think might be the easiest potential foundation for trust and safety to form and would be particularly useful for therapists dealing with schizoid patients. I'd be a lot more severely schizoid had I not had one person who was unusually non judgmental to keep a safe mental connection with growing up, who could hold space even for odd ideas, who thought out of the box, who allowed me humanity and space without pushing any idea of what I should be or do onto me. I think that paved the way for easier access to my own thoughts and feelings overall, and could be replicated in therapy or other relationships meant for recovery

"Over the past decade, fragmentation within American psychology has only intensified. Compounding this condition is the growing influence of AI-driven, algorithmic reductionism—the view that a human being may be understood as little more than the sum of predictable data points. The field now finds itself stretched across neurobiological reductionism, algorithmic behavioral prediction (the application of mathematical models and data to forecast behavior), positive psychological approaches to flourishing, trauma-centered practices—which, while invaluable, can at times risk organizing identity around injury rather than possibility if not held within a broader developmental frame—and a renewed, though not widespread, interest in spirituality and meaning-making.
Each of these movements carries genuine insight; yet, in their relative isolation from one another, they have contributed to a profession that struggles to articulate a coherent vision of the human being. The modern psychologist—unless choosing to privilege certain roles over others—is thus called upon to be scientist, healer, technician, and, at times, a spiritual companion—often without a unifying framework capable of holding these roles together."
