What's your opinion on self diagnoses? My girlfriend doesn't believe that I have a right to label myself without first having conformation from a professional.
I know it can be really reassuring to read something that describes what youâre going through and go âhey! Thatâs me!â, but we really donât recommend self diagnosing. I think you should speak to a professional about whatever it is that youâre going through. It takes a long time to train to become a doctor or mental health professional, and thatâs because mental health is a really complicated thing. Different mental illnesses can have the same symptoms, and mental illness can even share some symptoms with physical illnesses- for example, depression can make you feel tired and lethargic all of the time, but so can anaemia! Doctors are trained to test these things and tell the apart, but for people like you and me without that training, it can be really tricky. You can read about our thoughts on self diagnosis in more detail.
The other really big reason why I think itâs important to get diagnosed by a doctor is because that is the first step in getting help for whateverâs going on. Once a doctor has diagnosed you, they can give you access to treatments, support and possibly even medication, that you wouldnât be able to get at home.
I think your girlfriend is probably just looking out for your best interests when she tells you to go see a professional. It really is the best way to find out for sure whatâs going on, and to get the best help.
Hope that helps, lovely :)
