Look, 80% of the time reading academic texts is just a constant testing of your patience as you try to endure yet another author expressing their ideas in the most convoluted way possibly, but occasionally you run into someone like Gérard Genette who can not only get his ideas across clearly and efficiently, but will also be genuinely funny, and it’s a fucking delight. Like:
He is just! a frustrated! structuralist! who would like words! to be used! properly!
The exasperation! The resignation!
“what it is they are (probably) thinking about when they (haphazardly) utter the word parody”
WORDS MEAN THINGS he screams into the void. And then he does cute shit like this:
Thanks, Gérard, you’re right, it is chilly this season and I will put my tools away when I am done reading your 40 chapters on transposition. It’s a lie though, he doesn’t put his tools away when he is done with transposition. Instead, he does this:
“longish” he says on page 384. “I don’t have time or the competencies to get into this” he says, before spending the next 10 pages talking about it.
Amazing.
