The Celestial Realm: We always deliver justice and everyone is treated fairly!
Meanwhile…
Sun Wukong: (humiliated by them and deceived into accepting a terrible job offer, tricked, and was imprisoned under a claustrophobic mountain for 500 years and then forced to endure 81 trials of tribulations while carrying his weak Master on his skinny waist back the entire journey cause the rest of his team couldn’t tell human from demon 80% of the time)
Erlang Shen: (mother was imprisoned under Peach Mountain for 1000 years and father killed by the Jade Emperor because of stubborn celestial rules; had to fight against them all cause none of those bitches would ever consider leaving his poor family alone unless he spilled blood)
Nezha: (died tragically and violently when he was only 3 years old because of Li Tian Wang aka his father aka a high ranked celestial official who was granted a powerful pagoda by the realm to control him)
Chang’E And HouYi: (both of them were punished for SAVING HUMAN LIVES because Yandi the Sun Deity’s 10 children were burning everything on earth; the Jade Emperor told HouYi to save the people then got mad when he did and punished him for killing the suns even though that was the only way to save the common folks; forced out of immortality and tried to achieve it again through a treacherous journey through seas and mountains etc. to meet the Queen Mother of the West who only gave him a dosage for ONE PERSON (I know she has more she’s just STINGY); Chang’E ingests the pills after being forced and never sees her husband again cause he died of old age all because the celestial realm is “fair” and “so generous”)
Cowherd and Weaver: (Queen Mother forces her rainbow seven girls to weave day and night without rest; when Weaver meets the love of her life (a human) Queen Mother is pissed she has freedom and forces them apart to only meet once every year “out of the goodness of her heart”; btw the Weaver and Cowherd have CHILDREN and Weaver can only see them when she sees Cowherd ONE DAY EVERY YEAR)
White Snake: (loving couple: forced apart by celestial rules cause White Snake is a “disgusting” Yao Guai marrying a human even though they ARE IN LOVE LEAVE THEM ALONE)
…
Sun Wukong: Yeah, I fear the celestial’s claim is bullshi-
Another ancient mythology ask. This one concerns linguistics, but in the context of Qu Yuan's Heavenly Questions 天问, the archer Yi is referred to as Yi-Yi 夷羿. Does Qu Yuan refer to him with this title to reflect his status as an "Eastern Foreigner" (东夷/Dongyi) who seized the Xia throne, or is he using the more archaic version of the 夷/Yi word, which means "big bow"? Should Yi's title in Heavenly Questions be read as Yi the Foreigner or Yi of the Great Bow?
The line the name comes from is 帝降夷羿, 革孽夏民, which certainly suggests that this is the Yi of the Xia dynasty, from the Dongyi (who is seen as someone who saves the Xia people from disasters in the poem).
The lines that follow also immediately go into his shooting of Hebo and seizing of his wife, Chunhu, his killing of the great boar and the rejection of his meat sacrifice by the Heavenly Emperor, then end with his death at the hands of Chunhu and Hanzhuo.
Compared to idealized figures like Guan Yu, pre-Qin Dynasty heroes like Yi tend to be a little wilder. (Hou Yi is a title granted to him after he usurps the throne, with Hou meaning Lord in Xia Dynasty Chinese. You also see Yu the Great being called Xia Hou Yu/夏后禹.)
Yi was venerated as a hero despite his faults. The student who murdered him, Pang Mang, survived to teach the art of archery to the kings of Chu, and is also remembered in Warring States texts as a great hero and archer. Han Jiao, the son of the advisor who usurped Yi's throne and was then in turn killed by the Xia King Shao Kang returning to reclaim his kingdom, is also hailed as a hero for his great strength that let him tow ships across the land. It didn't matter that these men were flawed, or that they fought against each other. They were all heroes capable of great feats, and Yi and Han Jiao had been murdered in undeserving ways. After the Han Dynasty, though, Yi got split into two different characters, a "legendary" Yi from the time of Yao, and a "historical" Yi from the Xia Dynasty, with the "legendary" Yi being the tragic hero abandoned by his wife and murdered by his disciple.
Thanks for the information! I never new how much these characters changed over time!
TO SHOOT DOWN THE SUN.
I named my Decidueye, Houyi, after the archer of myth and legend who shot down 9 gods, in the form of 9 suns.
What started as a joke of poke god "deserving a few arrows", ended up becoming a cinematic as hell finale.
The prophecy has been fulfilled as he lands the final blow...!
I had to draw the moment as tribute to one hell of a fantastic game!

Now for the Houyi! Wei Wuxian companion piece to this year’s Cheng’e. He’s definitely showing off for Cheng’e to prove himself worthy of his favor!
This is based off another of the Fuxiangyuan mooncake tins, who had a head tilt and hair wisps I thought would work well. The smirk is all Wei Wuxian though.

"This pain you feel...you might believe that you will never recover. And while it might always hurt, the pain will fade a little more each time -- until one day, there will be no more tears. Just the memories and the hope, that you might find some joy in them again."
