Okay so last night i watched the new Syfy tv show Heroes of Cosplay. And the woman on there who cosplayed Merida from Brave really pissed me off. Here’s why:
First of all, not everyone knows what cosplay is, and when they came out with this show, people started calling us weirdos and losers. They told us were wasting all of our money and time in competitions etc.
This Brave cosplayer on the show was completely OBSESSED over her weight and body type for her Merida outfit. “I think I can pull off Merida because I’ve gained a lot of weight and she has a badonkadonk.” And as we go through the show, all she talks about is how her body type has to be perfect. Not to mention, all the other cosplayers in the show are skinny.
This makes cosplayers who aren’t canon weight or body type feel like they can’t be good cosplayers, or won’t succeed at the character because they don’t have the body for it. It makes us look shallow.
Cosplay isn’t completely about competitions like this show is making it out to be. Every con I have been to so far, hasn’t had a huge cash prize for the best costume. We do it purely for fun.
Sorry for the rant, I just got so heated over it.
