I have been absent from Tumblr! I just sorta..fail to update all the time. So sorry about that! But this is what I have been up to! I was crafting a Battle Ready Warrior style princess peach that was my own design. Inspired by Hyrule Warriors and an idea of what I'd love peach to be wear in Super Smash Bros haha. I wore this to Katsucon 2015! Armor: Worbla and Craft Foam I purchased the corset and poofy petticoat. Everything else, made by me! Making things!!! This is my Maleficent headpiece in the works. #maleficent #disney #cosplay #cosplaytutorial #foam #fauxleather
So I noticed that this was getting a bit of recognition and I wanted to expand on it as to how I went about making the Maleficent Headpiece step-by-step. This is fairly inexpensive and all in all only cost less than $50 to make after all materials used! I hope this helps! I just sorta started experimenting and combined different methods that I found online. Materials:
*Upholstery Foam
*Hot Glue
*Masking Tape *Duct Tape *Worbla (www.cosplaysupplies.com) *Whatever Fabric you want to use for the headpiece! I recommend something with a wee bit of stretch. *Sewing Machine or Hand Sewing (So needle and thread)
Step 1: I took Upholstery foam (1 inch thick) that I found at Wal-Mart in the craft section. They didn't have anything thicker. I cut out the shape I wanted x 4 (This part doesn't have to be perfect, just try to make them as similar as possible) I glued two pieces together creating a piece 2 inches thick. Now I had the two "horns."
Step 2:I cut and trimmed the edges of the horns to to help maintain the rounded shape in the next step. (Once again, doesn't have to be perfect at this point)
Step 3: I took masking tape and started wrapping both horns to get the more rounded shape. This is where you want them to as symmetrical as possible! Just keep wrapping and adjusting until you get the shape you want! Step 4: Using Worbla scrap pieces I had (Or another "modifiable" material) Create a partial "helmet," Cowl," or whatever you wanna call it. Mine extended over my head and back to the middle part of my head. I cut a "Widows Peek." I formed it on a mannequin head but if you don't have one you can use a large foam ball or anything rounded. After the material cooled a bit (but still moldable), I literally wrapped my head in tin-foil and plopped it on my head and molded it directly to the shape of my head! (BE CAREFUL! WORBLA CAN BE SUPER HOT). Step 5: I wanted my horns to tilt back and away from the front of my head a bit. This is just personal preference. You may want them straight up and down! It depends on what you are looking for :) I used Worbla again and cut out 2 squares. and I attached them on the sides in the location that I wanted my horns to sit. Basically you just need to give your horns a base. Step 6: I first used Electrical tape (It was all I had at the time) to place the horns onto the horn base. This was good because I adjust the horns until I got them in the position I wanted. Gluing them down would limit your ability to re position. I then duct taped (The blue tape you see) the horns directly to the horn base. I also modified curve of the horns a bit which is why you see duct tape at the top of the horns as well. Step 7: A sewed together 2 horn sleeves. You'll want to create the sleeves in the shape of the horns (Trust me). A fabric with a bit of stretch is good to help hug your horn (I am no sewing expert but this helped me). I used the same fabric for the rest of the head piece! It was all about draping at this point. It is hard to describe but I took two panels and wrapped starting at the top and then down and around the horns to the back. (Honestly, all the fabric is hot glued on 0_0 ). In the front I used a different upholstery fabric to cover the "Widows Peek" mocking the designs of Angelina Jolie's Maleficent. Just play with it and hopefully it will work out for you!! STEP 8: DONE! I truly hope this helps <3
Each stage of building the breast plate! Took approx 5-6 hours to craft using craft foam and Worbla! <3
New project for Katsucon!!!!!! This is an original idea that I had and hopefully I can make it happen! The picture is just something I sketched to help me translate what was in my head to life!!! Any guesses on what is happening here???? :-D this is seriously a dream project that I've had in my head since October of last year 0_0

COSPLAY COMPETITION CONFESSIONAL
Judging a costume contest is an extremely difficult thing. I honestly do not even like calling it a "cosplay competition." To me, it is more of a COSPLAY SHOWCASE! But i'll just refer to it as a competition to avoid confusion. I was honored to judge at VA Comic Con along side other super talented cosplayers! Below is a photo of all the judges and host! (I am the Princess Celestia cosplayer). It was only my second time judging anything. AND MAN! It was soooo super hard to pick only a handful of cosplays out of 100 + contestants.
Let me just state that I and ALL cosplayers know first hand how much time, money, effort, and sanity is spent on crafting and/or putting together a cosplay! Even if a costume is purchased, there is still time, modifying, styling, make-up, acting the part etc, that goes into it. Every single person that walks across a cosplay competition stage deserves acknowledgment and appreciation for their cosplay! They are on that stage because they are proud of what they created and want to showcase it for all to see. Even if you may disagree with the end result of the competition, keep in mind that those who did win have feelings and deserve respect just like ALL other cosplayers in a competition.
At the end of the day, each judge for any one competition is going to have different styles of judging and what they are looking for. It will completely vary from competition to competition. For me, I judge an armor based cosplay exactly the same as a tailoring/sewing project. Just because a cosplay involves less clothing, does not mean it is any less creative. Just because it is a huge over the top armored cosplay, does not mean it automatically trumps the less detailed designs!
I personally look at craftmanship, Innovative techniques, showmanship, and accuracy of the character. I try to be well-rounded and open-minded. But my judging style may be different from someone else. Perhaps one judge has a strong acting background, thus weighs showmanship more so than anything else. Another judge may make a decision purely on accuracy, judging based on how close they look to the original design. At the end of the day, everyone has a different background and personality, which may be reflected in the way they judge and the outcome of the competition. Not only that, each judge has to work together and agree on winners collectively. I can tell you now that when I judged (We had 6 judges total), there were things we disagreed on. We did not always have an anonymous decision. But as a team, we worked it out. We had to work it out and that may mean not getting your way. You can always present your case which may sway the other judges but majority rules! I will say that one thing I refuse to judge on, is my personal relationship with any one cosplayer in a competition. I will judge solely on the cosplay itself. Under NO circumstance will I EVER outweigh a friends work over a cosplayer I do not know on a personal level. Everyone WILL be judged equally and should be!
____________________________________________________ NOW, I have also been a participant in several cosplay competitions. So I have been on the "other side." I have never took home an award. But for me, the experience in itself was awesome enough and I have learned a lot from it! I will admit (I am only human) that I have questioned the judges decisions before. But I have never thought "That person did not deserve it." They did deserve it. It was what those particular judges were looking for! Respect them and use them as inspiration! I have had several people come up to me following a costume contest and say "You should have won." ...No I shouldn't have. I shouldn't have won because the ones who did win deserve their time in the spotlight! You are basically telling me that the others did not deserve it. And those that did win should have their time to shine and be proud of their work. Not to be put down. Walk away humble! Yes, it is sad when you don't win and it can be discouraging. You know more than anyone else how much time and effort you put into your work. But you also do not know the behind the scenes process of everyone else! Be proud. Learn from the experience. Improve yourself for next time! At the end of the day, your biggest competitor is yourself! _____________________________________________________ Judging and Competing is a very exciting aspect of cosplay! It is truly an amazing learning experience. For me, competing is just something I do for the experience. I never go into a competition expecting to win something. But it can be a confidence booster. It can help you with future cosplays. It can help you market yourself as an artist. There are many many benefits to it! It may not be for you but just know that you are appreciated! And when judging, keep an open mind! Be thoughtful, appreciative and encouraging to everyone. COSPLAYERS, Your work is amazing! Keep on keeping on! Continue learning and loving the art of cosplay! <3 Please, if you have any questions or concerns about competing, judging, or cosplay in general. I am here for you <3 I am by no means an expert! But I'll be happy to help in any way I can!!! <3 Katie www.facebook.com/katieflemingcosplay

I have me MIA recently from my Tublr but I have been hard at work slaving away on my newest cosplay of Lady Sylvanas from World of Worcraft! I am basing this directly from the out of game design with a few modifications here and there! All the armor is made from EVA Foam/ Craft Foam and then covered in Worbla! I am currently getting ready to move onto the final painting stage!!! :-D! Yipeeeee!
So I made one of those little fortune teller thingies (I was bored) and realize they sorta resemble a Destiny Ghost…… Hmmm :) With a couple extra folds here and there, it could be possible! :)
